Shirazis Celebrate 5 Years at Wine and Spirits Shop

Berthoud Wine and Spirits partners Jay Shirazi and his son Rob are celebrating five years of ownership in the business that began more than 58 years ago on Mountain Avenue.

The present store looks very different from the liquor store that Roy Jones opened in 1950. Since acquiring it, the Shirazis have created a major addition to accommodate the large selection of wines they offer.

A brick archway in the shop serves as the entrance to the wine department where many varieties are kept in handmade wooden racks. The area where the wines are kept is climate controlled to preserve their quality.

The wines are group according to country of origin and also according to type, including an organic section. The selections include wines from California, Colorado, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain and France.

Jay Shirazi said that many of his customers believe that Berthoud Wine and Spirits has the best selection of wines in the area, as well as fair prices. A wine tasting is also offered at the shop every Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Shirazi moved to Colorado from Germany eight years ago where he had been working in the import/export industry. A native of Iran, he holds a degree in refinery engineering.
