Turner Boys’ Basketball Team Drops Second Straight

Pedro Anderson scored a team-high 20 points, but Turner Middle School’s eighth-grade varsity squad dropped a 66-45 decision to Highland on Oct. 28.

Quinton Urcheck and Alex Ayala added seven points apiece, with Urcheck hitting a 3-pointer.

“Hopefully it will get better as the season goes on,” Turner head coach Stan Kauffman said. “We have lost our first two games, but they are out of conference play. We have some new kids that are just learning, but once we get in our division things should get better.”

Turner’s eighth-grade JV squad scored a 28-25 victory over Highland.

In seventh-grade action, Turner, led by Zach Bracken’s game-high eight points, defeated Highland, 37-13. Nate Ryken and Dylan Froelich added six points apiece.

“The effort level is definitely there,” said Dragons’ head coach Ryan Smith. “We’re learning to play together as a team. We’re emphasizing things that we’ll need to have for success in our conference, like playing good man defense and rebounding the ball.”

The Turner seventh-grade JV squad also won, 41-8.

U-16 Blaze Softball Squad Wins Fall Classic

The U-16 Berthoud Blaze black softball team won the Fall Classic open tournament championship the weekend of Oct. 24-25 in Brighton.

The Berthoud squad took top honors with a 4-1 record.

“These girls came together as a team in a very short amount of time and showed a lot of heart in winning this tournament,” head coach Norm Sproles said.

Wikre Named to Rocky Mountain All-Academic Team

Former Berthoud High School standout and Mesa State offensive lineman Trevor Wikre was named to the Rocky Mountain All-Academic Team.

Wikre, who recently received nationwide coverage for having his right pinkie amputated so that he could finish his senior season with the Mavericks, has a 3.45 grade-point average. He is majoring in K-12 physical education.

He was one of four Mesa State players — the others being junior running back Bobby Coy (Littleton), junior defensive lineman Nic Pade (Arvada) and senior linebacker Ryan Kadavy (Greeley) — to be honored.

This is the third straight year that he’s been named All-Academic, and the second time he was named first-team. He was a first-team All-Academic choice his sophomore year.

He is the son of Jeff and Kim Wikre.
