STATE COLLEGE FAIR

I graduated from Berthoud High in 2007, and I vividly remember how overwhelming and time consuming searching for a college was. High school students have so much on their plate as they get closer to graduation. Many students are involved in clubs, sports, community service, jobs, school work, and being active with friends and family all while preparing for their future. It would be a great opportunity for students if Berthoud is able to host the In-state College Fair every four years.

In-state college fairs are a great way for students and their parents to get information as well as speak with representatives from a variety of in-state colleges. This would allow more students from Berthoud a chance to gain valuable knowledge of many colleges around Colorado that they might not be able to get otherwise. When I was in high school, I was not able to attend the college fairs because they were hosted outside of Berthoud. Because of that, my choices of schools seemed limited.   

Berthoud should be able to be part of educating its students about colleges in Colorado, by hosting the In-state College Fair.  The fair would allow students in Berthoud to choose the school that fits their financial budget, academic needs, personal interests and future goals.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

It is a remarkable day in US history that in only 40+ short years since LBJ enacted civil rights legislation we now have a black president.  Whether you are for Obama or not we must all pause to honor the significance and hopefully healing for the black community for the atrocities of slavery that gave birth to our nation… to paraphrase a quote of Dr. King…Let us become a nation of power with compassion, might with morality and strength with clear vision.

I for one am deeply encouraged that we have taken this step and broken through a barrier that has existed for 43 presidents… now we are getting somewhere.

FOND MEMORIES OF TIM OWSLEY

I must take exception to an obituary that was published in the Berthoud Recorder Nov. 5, 2008, regarding the recent passing of Tim Owsley. The obituary printed was a travesty for a very good man and a gentle soul.

Tim was a long time resident of Berthoud and was probably your mailman at one time or another as he was a postal worker for many years here in our little hamlet. He was conscientious and dedicated to his job. Tim was a gentle man willing to give the shirt off his back or give you a roof over your head if it was needed. I found him to be a gentleman at all times. I found him to be a good friend and a good listener. Tim was a good man and should be remembered in that light, not as portrayed in last week’s paper.

COMMUNITY SEPARATORS FORUM      

Are you interested in maintaining farmland, pasture land, and other types of open space between our communities in northern Colorado?  Do you hope that your community will be able to keep its independent and unique identity and not be all run together, so you can’t tell one town from the other?

If you would like more information about community separators, please come to the forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Larimer County. It will be held on Monday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harmony Library in Fort Collins at the corner of Shields and Harmony. There will be representatives from the communities of Berthoud, Windsor, Wellington, Johnstown, Timnath, Loveland, and Fort Collins, and from Larimer County. They will each present information about what is happening concerning community separators in their community. Afterwards, they will answer questions from the audience.

LIBRARY GETS A BOOST

Thanks to the combined efforts of the entire Berthoud community, the Berthoud Community Library District has a bright future.

The passage of Referendum 5A will have far-reaching effects for everyone within the district. The library hours are gradually being restored and updated offerings of books, videos and other materials will soon follow.

We are proud to be part of a community that has chosen to stand together and join hands across party affiliations and even town limit borders to speak up for the importance of the opportunities available through our library.

As our committee chairman said, “Berthoud area people know what to do when a problem is brought to their attention. That’s what our community is made of.”
