LOVELAND –– Andrew Penner made 24 saves and the Colorado Eagles improved to a CHL-best 13-2 with a 5-1 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
Colorado outshot the Mudbugs, 52-25. And when the Eagles weren’t beating Bossier-Shreveport to the net, the teams were beating on each other, literally. The teams combined for 106 penalty minutes and six fights.
Ryan Tobler, the Eagles’ 6-foot-3, 225-pound bruiser who was involved in the game’s first fight, scored twice. Colorado also got goals from Ed McGrane, Aaron Schneekloth and Konrad Reeder.
Bossier-Shreveport broke up Penner’s shutout with Clay Toring’s third-period goal.
On Friday night, the Eagles, behind Greg Pankewicz’s third hat trick of the season, beat the Rapid City Rush 8-2.
Colorado scored a franchise-best seven goals in the second period, including a pair by Kevin Ulanski. Reeder, Adam Hogg and Steve Haddon also scored as the Eagles beat Rapid City for the fourth time this season. Morgan Cey made 24 saves in net for the Eagles.
Including two preseason victories, Colorado is 9-1 this season at the BEC. After Wednesday’s home with the archrival Rocky Mountain Rage, the Eagles wrapped up a four-game homestand Friday night against the Rush.
Colorado opened the week with a 3-1 win at New Mexico. Brett Hammond snapped a 1-1 tie in the third period and Reeder, a former member of the Scorpions, added an insurance goal. Pankewicz opened the scoring in the first period.
ON SALE. The Colorado Eagles’ holiday store in Foothills Mall in Fort Collins is open through the end of the calendar year. A huge sale on jerseys is set for Friday with Fraser Filipic and Tom Reimann on hand along with the Eagles Chicks and team mascot Slapshot. They will be in attendance from noon to 1 p.m.
