A local organization dedicated to helping special-needs individuals thankfully escaped unscathed when a truck caught fire at the facillity last week.
Hearts and Horses, located in Loveland, is a non-profit therapeutic riding center that promotes the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being of individuals with special needs.
Facilities manager Ken Lang had been driving the 30-year-old truck on Monday, Nov. 24, just minutes before the truck burst into flames. Lang had gone into the tool house and came out to find the engine and cab already on fire. Although he attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, the Loveland Fire Department had to be called.
While everyone at Hearts and Horses were saddened at the loss of their only truck, they were thankful no individuals or horses were injured and no other property was damaged, especially considering the close proximity of the tool house to the facilities other buildings. “It could have had a horse trailer attached, it could have been much worse,” said Program Director Jan Pollema
As a non-profit organization primarily supported by donations, Hearts and Horses unfortunately does not have funds available to replace the truck – an absolute necessity for running the property. They are currently borrowing another truck to use until other arrangements can be made. H and H hopes someone in the community would be willing to donate another truck to them.
Donations to the facility are tax deductible and anyone interested in donating a vehicle can contact Hearts and Horses at (970) 663-4200 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
