FORT COLLINS — Amy Ekart scored a game-high 20 points, but Berthoud’s girls basketball team had no answer for Columbine’s pressure defense in a 56-36 loss Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the Poudre Invitational.
It was the Lady Spartans’ first game since a season-opening win over Greeley Central two weeks ago, and Berthoud’s rust showed from the layoff.
“Maybe a little bit,” Berthoud head coach Randy Earl said. “Their press had a lot to do with it and we could’ve shot a little better.”
Besides Ekart, no other Spartan reached double figures. Sarah Loberg was second in scoring with six points.
Columbine (5-0) was led by Randee Hayes with 17 points. Demitra Apergis added 15 points.
Berthoud (1-1) will play Denver North in Thursday’s consolation bracket at Poudre High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
