FREDERICK — The Berthoud boys’ basketball team pulled through with another win in overtime, this time against the Frederick Warriors on Tuesday night.
The Spartans scored on six of 10 field-goal attempts in the four-minute overtime for a 60-56 victory. Joel Maly led the Spartans with 18 points. Jeff Shields followed with 16 points, Ryan Barron added 12 and junior Graham Shaw, back in action after missing the last three games with a knee injury, scored nine. Maly added 12 rebounds.
“I thought that we could have played better,” Shields said. “It feels good to win in overtime again because it proves that we come back and finish our games and that the pressure doesn’t affect us.”
Frederick led 9-6 in the opening minutes of the game when Maly hit a free throw. But the Warriors continued to maintain their lead at 14-7 going into the second quarter.
Frederick then scored six of the game’s next eight points on 3-pointers from Ruben Cardoza and Brandon Frank. Shields scored four of his 16 points to pull the Spartans (2-3) to within 28-14 at halftime.
Berthoud closed the gap to 34-26 after three quarters by finishing the quarter on a 6-3 run.
The Spartans continued their comeback in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 47. Frederick’s Nick Brodie scored to put the Warriors up by two again, but Shields rebound of a Maly attempt tied the game again.
The team’s traded baskets again, this time Tanner Ellingsen for Frederick and Shields again, off an assist from Barron, to send the game to overtime tied at 51.
