As I look back on 2008, my biggest joy has been the rejuvenation of the Berthoud Recorder. The newspaper has come a long way in a year. As I compared the last issue of the year with the first, I found the change to be dramatic. With input from an excellent staff of editors, writers and photographers, the Recorder has become the leader in reporting news in Berthoud. I am very pleased with the results.
In spite of my not being ready, Christmas has come and gone and we survived it. I hope your Christmas Day was as enjoyable as ours was. The family gathered at our home for dinner and the exchanging of gifts. We had eight people and ten dogs in attendance. Everyone had a good time. We have many smaller gifts to open and our tradition is to open them one at a time as everyone watches. It takes a long time, but the family has a wonderful time together.
One of my favorite gifts is a heater for the engine of my car. Shar gets to park her car in the heated garage and she wanted me to have a warm car too. She expressed some concern that I may forget to unplug the electricity before I drive off in the morning. Perhaps I can come up with a system to remind me. For example, I could have a warning flag hanging from the drivers visor whenever I plug in the heater. A small clamp with a red streamer might do the job. I could also institute a “preflight inspection” like we did when I was flying airplanes. I must admit that we do have a two-car garage; however, putting in an engine heater will be easier than cleaning the other side of the garage.
We have been dog sitting this week. Half of the dogs here on Christmas Day were Greater Swiss Mountain dogs belonging to daughter Carolynn. She committed to taking care of someone else’s Swissy during that week and thought that six dogs at her house might be too much, so she asked us to keep one of hers. Cedar, the matriarch of the dog family has been spending the week. I calculate that she is about the same relative age as we are and spends a lot of time just lying around. She curls up next to the bed and sleeps through the night without any disturbance and her snoring is very quiet.
It has been a quiet week in the town as no meetings were scheduled, but work has continued on the Mountain Avenue project. Crews continue to work on the concrete and the new streetlights are finally working. I am wondering what happens to the old lights at the intersection of Fourth Street. They are still in place and they seem to have the important function of holding up the traffic signals as well as keeping the intersection brightly lit. I will have to see what I can find out about that.
January should be a busy month as everyone tries to catch up after the holidays. I will be busy too and I will see you around town.
