The Berthoud Lady Spartans ended a five-game losing streak with a 65-23 win over Fort Morgan on Tuesday night at Berthoud High School.
The much-needed win ended in a way that the Berthoud girls’ basketball team had been hoping would happen for a few weeks now.
“We came out really flat in the first half,” senior Rose Heaphy said. “We weren’t really playing to our level, but after halftime we found our groove. Our shots fell and we were able to pull away.”
The Spartans (5-8, 4-6 4A Northern Conference) held a six-point lead in the first quarter after junior Amy Ekart gained possession of the ball after a Fort Morgan turnover.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs’ Kacee Holmes tied the game at 15-all. But with Heaphy and sophomore Danielle Wikre scoring in the final minutes of the half, the Lady Spartans regained a four-point lead at the intermission.
Then junior Kacey Fagler assisted sophomore Julia Perry for two points in the fourth quarter to give Berthoud more than enough cushion to take home the win.
Ekart finished with a game-high 13 points. Perry scored 12 for Berthoud.
Holmes led the Mustangs (0-14, 0-11) with eight points.
