STERLING — Aaron Reyes and Mike Janda scored 11 points apiece to lead four players in double figures as the Sterling Tigers pounded Berthoud, 70-30 on Saturday night in boys’ basketball action at Wally Post Gymnasium. The teams traded baskets the first 2:30 minutes into the game with the score tied at eight, but then the Tigers (13-3, 11-2 4A Northern Conference) went on a 12-1 run to go ahead 20-9 later in the first quarter. Joel Maly scored a late layup in the first to cut the deficit to nine, but that would be the last time the Spartans would be within double digits the rest of the night.
Berthoud didn’t score the final 5 minutes, 13 seconds of the first half and trailed 36-15 at halftime.
Whether it was shooting 3-pointers, driving to the basket or creating turnovers and turning them into fast-break points, Berthoud had no answers for Sterling’s offensive onslaught.
The lead grew to 32 points by the end of the third quarter and 40 by game’s end.
Berthoud (7-9, 7-6) was led by Maly’ 12 points. Shane Hart added 11.
Besides Reyes and Janda, also scoring in double figures for the Tigers were Brent Savolt and Patrick Mertens, both with 10 points.
