FORT COLLINS — Katie Beckvermit, Berthoud’s No. 1 singles player, led the Lady Spartans to a sweep in Wednesday’s singles matches, but host Poudre won all four doubles matches for a 4-3 win.
The match was the third time Berthoud had tried to open the season. The Lady Spartans were scheduled to face Sterling on Feb. 26 and then again Tuesday, but both times the match was rescheduled, this time for March 24. A match last Thursday at University in Greeley was postponed until March 31.
Beckvermit and the Lady Spartans’ No. 2 singles player, Sarah Kemp, lost just two games each en route to convincing straight-set victories. No. 3 single Dusti Waite followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kayla Jubiet, but the table was turned in doubles action.
The Lady Spartans won just one set in four doubles matches, despite being competitive in each.
Berthoud’s lone set victory came at No. 4 doubles, where juniors Jenny Raak and Kate Essig rallied from a 6-3 loss in the opening set for a 6-2 win to even the match at one set apiece. But Poudre’s Deanna Rhodes and Maggie Bryeske finished the match with a 6-2 third-set victory.
Berthoud plays at Erie on Thursday.
