Late Lunge Gives Berthoud First State Title in 15

By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LAKEWOOD — Bryce Munoz lunged forward, trying to gain that last little inch of an advantage that he could muster. As soon as the Berthoud senior crossed the finish line he tumbled forward, ending up with a laceration under his left shoulder blade and abrasions on his back. That last-gasp gamble proved to be well worth it Berthoud’s 4x100-meter relay team did something that the school hadn’t achieved since Amy Doane won the girls 300 hurdle in 1994. ... Full Story

Solid States for Spartans Trio

Bezanson, Hall, Mills Make Top 10 By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LAKEWOOD — Collectively, the Berthoud girls’ track and field team probably didn’t do as well as it would’ve liked at the 4A state track and field championships. But, individually, things turned out pretty well. Underclassmen Tanya Bezanson, Cheyenne Hall and Courtney Mills all placed in their respective events to help Berthoud’s girls finish 23rd out of 39 teams in this year’s meet at Jefferson County Stadium ... Kiah Leonard Boulder Bound

By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder Kristi Leonard was running along when she saw a familiar face pass her by during the Bob Turner 5K on May 2. She was surprised, but maybe she shouldn’t have been. That familiar face was her 12-year-old daughter Kiah. “I was running when I saw her coming back at the turnaround point. Once I saw her I saw that she was in first. I was pretty surprised but at the same time she’s done a really good job of running,” the elder Leonard said. That’s an ... Full Story

By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder Each year, Turner Middle School keeps churning out track and field competitors. And each year Turner turns out champions. Nothing was different in 2009. For the third consecutive year, Turner won the league championship in the girls division, scoring 171 points to easily outdistance second-place Milliken, which scored 127. The victory on May 8, just three days after winning the league relays, had a lot to do with the pure numbers that turned out for the ... Full Story

4A States: Berthoud Golfers Can't Tame Tough

By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder COLORADO SPRINGS — Surely they would’ve liked for the results to be different, but for the three Berthoud girls golfers competing at the 4A state golf championship Monday and Tuesday at Patty Jewett Golf Course, they’ll have to settle for the next best thing.  At least they were there. That’s more than a lot of golfers can say. For Stephanie Heaton, Brandi Peter and Kacey Fagler, this week’s tournament was a humbling experience. Unlike their ... Full Story

By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder Athletes are always looking for an edge. Hopefully, more times than not (you listening Manny Ramirez?) that edge is attained by reasonable measures. If Berthoud High School athletes can raise the funds, they could be on track to do just that. All they need is community support and a little cash. OK, a lot of cash. Maximum Perform-X, according to its Web site at www.perform-x.com, is a sports performance enhancement program dedicated to helping athletes ... Full Story
