LONGMONT — Amy Krause benefited from a sturdy defense and an offense that turned it on late as Berthoud recorded its third shutout of the season Tuesday, 11-0 at Skyline.
Krause scattered seven hits over seven innings, walked five and struck out four, but it was the play of Berthoud’s defense in the middle innings and the Lady Spartans (3-1) ability to get some timely hitting in the latter innings that held Skyline at bay.
Berthoud led 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, when the host Lady Falcons loaded the bases with no outs. But after back-to-back outs, Skyline pitcher Sarah Wagner flew out to left field to end the threat. The Lady Spartans added a run in the fifth on Morgan Thonhoff’s inside-the-park home run before Skyline loaded the bases again, this time with two outs. Yet, once again, Krause got out of the inning without surrendering a run.
“Defensively, we were playing well. On offense, they were a little slow coming out of the gate but we talked to them about what they were doing,” Berthoud head coach Dick Klocek said.
Berthoud scored four runs in the sixth and capped the scoring with Lindsey Loberg’s three-run homer in the seventh.
It was good timing for Berthoud’s bats to come alive, Klocek said, with Northern Conference foe Niwot coming to town today.
The pitching hasn’t been too shabby, either. Since a 12-3 loss at Broomfield last Thursday, Berthoud has recorded 14 shutout innings, including Victoria Puchino’s 5-0 victory over Sterling on Saturday.
