BHS Roundup: Volleyball Unable to Finish Off Greeley Central

Berthoud Recorder

It was all going Berthoud’s way in the first two games, but it was the last three that were the problem.

For the second straight match, the Lady Spartans went five sets, and for the second time Berthoud failed to find the winning combination as the visiting Greeley Central Wildcats rallied for a 19-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-9 volleyball win at Berthoud High School on Tuesday night.

Berthoud, led by Kyla Duncan’s 32 kills, controlled the match early on, but miscues and miscommunication created problems in the third game and, unfortunately, the Lady Spartans were never able to find the answer for those problems.

“We played really well the first two games. The third game we kind of let up, thinking it might be a little easier game. Greeley Central brought their game. “They were not prepared to leave this house yet,” said Berthoud head coach Daisha Agho, who is still searching for her first win. BHS dropped its season opener at Fort Morgan on Thursday, also in five games despite tying the match twice. “The girls need to be able to push and ability to play through three games.”

Behind 17 kills and 18 digs for Taylor McNamera and Katey Seader’s 20 digs, Greeley Central rallied. The Wildcats scored the first four points of the third game and never trailed to close the deficit to 2-1. Greeley Central tied the match at two before scoring five straight points to open the decisive fifth game.

Even though Berthoud tied the fifth game at seven, the Wildcats closed out the match by scoring eight of the final 10 points.

Morgan Woodruff had 15 kills and Lexie Yates added 12 digs for Berthoud (0-2 overall, 0-2 4A Northern Conference).

Softball: Mountain View Halts Berthoud’s Winning Streak
LOVELAND — Kelly Scribner scattered six hits over seven innings and Mountain View scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-2 victory over Berthoud on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Spartans (5-2 overall, 5-2 4A Northern Conference).

Amy Ekart and Amy Krause each had two hits for Berthoud, which was coming off a 14-3 five-inning victory over Thompson Valley on Saturday. Krause also scored one of Berthoud’s two runs — the other was scored by Kaitlyn Bending.

Victoria Puchino suffered the loss. She gave up five runs, but only three earned, over six innings. Puchino allowed seven hits, while striking out five.

GOLF: Hansen Paves Way at Fort Morgan, Estes Park Meets
FORT MORGAN — Nils Hansen shot a 79 to lead Berthoud at Tuesday’s match at Fort Morgan. Luke Whitfield fired an 83, followed by Nick Monchak’s 85 and Jesse Sommers’ 89. Malik Sommers moved up from the junior varsity squad to shoot a 135.

The match came on the heels of a 12th-place finish Thursday at the Estes Park Invitational.

Hansen also shot a 79 at Estes Park to finish tied for 17th in the 79-player field. Jesse Sommers shot a season-best 84 to finish 33rd and Whitfield shot a 93.

Greeley Central took top team honors at Estes Park. The Wildcats’ Michael Lee was the top medalist after shooting a 72.
