Axel Ayala scored twice, one off an assist from Michael Berra and the other from Luis Tavison, in a 2-0 Berthoud boys soccer victory over Sterling on Thursday in the 3A Region 6 conference opener.
There was a lot of back-and-forth work between the teams in the first half before Berthoud responded with two goals in the second half.
“We worked hard and it paid off,” Berthoud head coach John Barron said. “The boys started to trust each other. We just need to continue with our creativity and movement and we will have a successful rest of the season.”
Unfortunately, that success wasn’t there Tuesday night in a 3-0 loss at Weld Central, which scored a pair of second-half goals to put the game away. The loss dropped Berthoud to 2-3, 1-1 in conference play.
Spartans Softball Bounces Back
LONGMONT –– Amy Ekart homered and drove in five runs and Berthoud rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth for a 12-5 victory over Longmont on Tuesday.
The win lifted the Spartans to 10-4 overall, 7-3 in the 4A Northern Conference.
Amy Krause went 3-for-4 with a homer and four runs scored and Victoria Puchino and Morgan Thonhoff combined on hold Longmont to eight hits.
The host Trojans did all of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to take a 5-4 lead but Berthoud quickly bounced back.
The win was welcomed after Thursday’s 4-3 loss at Frederick in which the host Warriors won it with a walkoff home run by Lauren Rivera in the bottom of the ninth.
XC Excels at Fort Morgan
FORT MORGAN –– Led by Emma Otto’s seventh-place finish in 20 minutes, 55 seconds, Berthoud’s girls cross country team took fourth out of 20 teams at Friday’s Fort Morgan Invitational.
Greeley Central won the meet, followed by Fossil Ridge, Rangeview, Berthoud and Windsor.
Amy Loberg finished 16th in 21:56 and Stefani Messick was 17th in 22:04.
The boys team was seventh out of 20 teams led by Nick Divine’s seventh-place run in 18:17.
Spencer Golsan was 22nd in 18:49. Fossil Ridge won the team competition, followed by Fort Morgan, Rangeview, Eaton and Greeley Central.
“Both sides ran well. They really went after it,” Berthoud head coach Curt Ranweiler said. “We wanted them to go for it hard from the starting line. Everybody stepped it up.”
Volleyball Falls to Greeley West
Greeley West scored a straight-set 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 victory at Berthoud on Tuesday night.
The loss ended a streak of five victories in six matches for the Spartans (5-5 overall, 2-3 4A Northern Conference).
Heather Stewart had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead Greeley West.
Last Thursday, BHS scored a 25-12, 33-31, 25-21 win at Northridge. Kyla Duncan had 23 assists and 10 digs, while Elle Satterthwaite also added 10 digs.
