Family 411: Town Unites for Sabados Fundraiser

By P.J. DiPentino

Recently there has been some question on Berthoud’s ability to get along; everything from Town board members bickering to a much-stressed relationship between the local newspapers.

This weekend I was refreshed by the response from the community to help one of our own. Alex Sabados is a Berthoud student who is currently battling cancer. His fight has been a struggle and the family has been feeling extreme heat financially.

This weekend they were able to get some relief from the heat at Alex’s FunRun. The day started off with a bike road race through the mountains. Local shop owner Dan Shaver of Roadhouse bikes organized and joined in the 42-mile event. Twenty or so riders took off from Berthoud around 9 a.m. and road along the Front Range to Masonville and back.

After the bike race the motorized bikes took off on a motorcycle rally through the scenic mountains along the Front Range.

For the homebodies there was a scavenger hunt on bikes taking families through a series of local business. There were prizes awarded from each stop at the finish line in a door prize give away.

Next the party moved to the Derby Grille where the world-class barbeque and entertainment was enjoyed by all. Rich Johnson played for three hours and kept the crowd in a pleasant mood with his renditions of classic music.

On Sunday the party made its way to the BMX racetrack where BMX racers squared off in an event that donated all proceeds to Alex. This is what living in a small community is about. We look out after each other.

When one of our kids is sick we come together and put everything else on the back burner. When one of our adults is ill we circle the wagons. I know we see a lot of negative press about one issue or another in our Town but this time the press is all positive.

Thank you to all the business that stepped up. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped pull off this great event. It is because of you that our Town was able to deposit close to $10,000 in the Sabados’ bank account to help.

Most of all thank you Berthoud. You make me proud to say, “I live in a great town called Berthoud.” Where people still care about their community members.
