Recent events, including two tanker trucks landing in the Poudre River and a forest fire approaching homes near Glen Haven, serve as a reminder of some of the hazards that exist for residents throughout Larimer County.
Because we would like everyone to be aware of critical events and kept as up-to-date as possible, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and our Emergency Management Section want to remind residents that we have developed a few different ways to communicate important information to the community during dangerous or potentially threatening situations.
One way you may receive emergency alerts is through the Emergency Notification System, which is what we call our ENS. The ENS allows our dispatch center to define a geographic area where people may be affected during a variety of incidents, including fires, floods, bad guys on the loose, etc. Our dispatchers prepare a message that will go to all land-line telephones, as well as to registered wireless phones, pagers, texting devices, and email accounts. You can register these wireless communications devices to be associated with addresses other than your primary residence as well.
For example, during the Glen Haven area fire, I spoke to a resident who wished to associate his wireless phone with a cabin that he had in the area of the fire so he could receive any alerts that we issued. That is very simple for him to do. You can also register to receive alerts for your place of employment, your children’s school, and more. We want to advise you of any situation in locations that are important to you and reach you in the form that best fits your needs.
To register for the ENS, visit our county 911 authority’s website at www.Leta911.org and follow the link at the top of the page titled “Sign Up For Emergency Alerts.”
Additionally, our county emergency manager provides communitywide emergency updates via the Internet during major situations. These updates are posted as circumstances allow during an incident, and are usually small bits of helpful information, not formal news releases. You can access his website at www.larimer.org/emergency , or you can sign up to receive Emergency Information Updates via email as they are released by going to www.Larimer.org/subscriptions.cfm and following the instructions. You may also elect to automatically receive all county news releases and a host of other information from the county if you wish.
Again, the Sheriff’s Office and our Emergency Management Section strive to provide important emergency information to our citizens in the timeliest manner as we can. If you wish to take advantage of these services, please take a few minutes to log on and sign up.
