JOHNSTOWN — Lindsey Ludwig and Amy Krause had four hits each and drove in seven runs combined as Berthoud rolled to a 16-1 rout of Roosevelt in 4A Northern Conference softball on Tuesday.
The Lady Spartans had 16 hits and scored 14 of their 16 runs off Roosevelt pitcher Morgan Devine.
Berthoud broke the game open with an eight-run third inning.
The win was much-needed after Berthoud suffered a hard loss at home last Thursday to Fossil Ridge, 5-4.
The score was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Ludwig reached third and scored on a Rachael Carter hit. But unhappy with trailing by a run, Fossil Ridge scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, ending the half inning with a 5-3 lead.
Amy Ekart scored in the bottom of the seventh, but it didn’t prove to be enough to take down the Sabre Cats.
“It wasn’t a bad game,” head coach Dick Klocek said. “We played well, especially since you can’t predict the wind. It was a good fought game.”
Fossil Ridge walked eight betters, six in the first three innings.
Emotions get the better of BHS volleyball
The Berthoud High volleyball team dropped Tuesday night’s home match with Thompson Valley, 3-0.
After the visiting Eagles took the first game, they won the second 25-18 and the third 26-24.
The first game seemed to start off a little slow for the Berthoud girls, with Thompson Valley quickly taking the first three points. The Spartans (5-8 overall, 2-8 4A Northern Conference) picked up a point, but it didn’t seem to faze the Eagles. Trailing 6-1, Berthoud started picking up the pace a little more and ended up tying the game at six. While Berthoud kept up the energy, Thompson Valley kept the lead and won the first game.
Thompson Valley won the second game, but the Spartans kept the score close in the third and by the end was back and forth with the Eagles for the lead. The score was tied at 24 when Thompson Valley pulled through with two points and the win.
“I am very pleased with the girls’ efforts tonight. I think we had some problems with emotions but those problems started to get fixed towards the end of the game,” Berthoud head coach Daisha Agho said. “We need to keep working, though, on our mental game and keeping the emotional side of the game under control.”
First-half tallies carry soccer to victory
STERLING — Luis Tavizon and Alex Ayala scored first-half goals, and Berthoud held on for a 2-1 victory over host Sterling on Tuesday night.
Ayala assisted on Tavizon’s goal before scoring his own goal off a Robbie Workman and Tavizon assist.
Alex Hughes made eight saves in goals as the Spartans improved to 4-4 overall, 3-1 in the 3A Region 6 Conference.
A red card on Austin Puckett in the second half resulted in Sterling’s lone goal.
“(We) stayed composed, continuing to stick to the game plan to possess (the ball) using good combination plays,” head coach John Barron said.
