Berthoud High School soccer fans got just what they wanted Thursday against Valley — a win for the Spartans. Even with below-freezing temperatures, Berthoud beat the visiting Vikings 4-0 at Max Marr Field.

The momentum of the game took a while to start up, but once it did, Berthoud kept the ball on the Vikings’ side of the field. The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Luis Tavizon goal.

Valley had several opportunities on goal, but strong defensive play by junior goalkeeper Alex Hughes kept Berthoud in control.

Berthoud, which followed up Thursday’s win with a 2-1 victory over Fort Lupton on Tuesday, started the second half with a goal by Magnus Hohmann, assisted by Axel Ayala. The team then fought off Valley’s offensive attack before scoring a third goal. Hohmann, with his second goal of the night, scored with an assist from Tavizon and Mitch Froehlich.

The Spartans (6-4) put one more goal in courtesy of a Zak Greathouse tally assisted by Ayala.

“The boys played a solid game tonight. I am very proud of the varsity players,” Berthoud head coach John Barron said. “They are continuing to build positive relationships with each other and stepping up when they are put in unfamiliar positions. They’re improving their ability to apply what they are learning at practice to their performance in games.”

Ayala and Nick Divine scored goals in Tuesday’s win over Fort Lupton with Divine’s second-half tally being the game-winner.

Volleyball snaps slide, stays in playoff hunt
Berthoud snapped a six-match losing streak with a 25-8, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 win over Mountain View on Tuesday at Berthoud High School.

Kyla Duncan had 28 assists and Morgan Woodruff had 13 kills. Jenna Colestock added 14 digs and five service aces.

The win was the Lady Spartans’ first since a 3-0 win over Northridge on Sept. 17 and first at home since beating Niwot two days earlier.

Berthoud (5-10, 3-8 4A Northern Conference) sits 12th in the 16-team conference with three games remaining. Only the top 11 teams qualify for the district tournament. The loss dropped Mountain View to 2-12, 1-10 in conference play.
