The Berthoud Girls Basketball team hosted Mountain View on Tuesday evening. Mountain View came into the game 3-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Both teams played aggressively throughout the game and Berthoud took the early lead outscoring its opponent 16 to 10 in the firs quarter. Those six points made the difference as Mountain View outscored the home team by one point in the second quarter, tied in the third and scored 22 points to Berthoud’s 20 in the fourth.
Mountain View tied the score at 16 with 6:40 left in the second quarter but the Berthoud girls fought back and led 28-23 at the half.
With 6:04 remaining the Spartans had a 47-38 lead but the visitors tied the game at 56 with 1:10 remaining. The Lady Lions scored again with 50 seconds on the clock. Berthoud tied the game again with 32 seconds remaining and regained control of the ball with 18 seconds left and Amy Ekart’s three pointer with 5 seconds left made the score 61-58.
Mountain View brought the ball in and made a three-quarter court throw but came up short of the basket as the buzzer went off. That would have been the end of the story, but the referees called a foul on Berthoud, apparently in the final second. After some conferencing with the coaches, 1.6 seconds was put back on the clock and Mountain View got an inbound ball. It was to no avail as Berthoud was able to steal the ball near mid court as the buzzer sounded for the second time.
Lady Spartans win 61-58 and are 4-3 overall, 3-1 in league play.
Coach Earl said was happy just to win. “We only had two days of practice,” He said.
The next game is at Windsor high School on Friday.
