According to the coaches, this was a match that Berthoud was not supposed to win, but win they did.
After the 145 pound bout Berthoud was leading 31 to 24, but after losing the next four decisions, Silver Creek was ahead 32 to 31 with one bout to go. In the final matchup, J.T Pickert faced Ben Bechard, ranked third in the state in the 215 pound weight class, in the bout that would determine the winning team.
The two wrestlers, both being somewhat cautious, mindful of the importance of their performance, ended the regulation three falls in a tie and went into a one minute overtime. Half way though the overtime, Pickert brought the Berthoud fans to their feet as he threw Bechard to the mat and scored the winning point.
Berthoud takes the meet 34 – 31.
