Larimer County: With wide seasonal swings in weather and temperatures, ice on ponds, lakes, rivers and reservoirs become increasingly dangerous. The Larimer County Dive Rescue Team (LCDRT) is recommending extreme caution on or around ice this time of year. In particular, they recommend avoiding walking on bodies of water where any melting is occurring, and restraint and careful supervision of children and pets around water any time of the year.

A common scenario is when a dog is allowed off-leash and then chases a bird across the ice. The dog then falls through thin ice, and the owner attempts to rescue their treasured companion. Then the owner also falls in. This can result in catastrophe.

The dive team asks that if you see a person or pet struggling in the water, that you immediately call 911. Maintain voice contact with the victim, but do not attempt rescue them by walking out on the ice – if they fell through the ice, you probably will too. The best solution is fast, trained, properly equipped response, and your 911 call can be the difference between life and death.
