BERTHOUD— The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has begin a traffic signal upgrade project on State Highway 56 at Fourth Street in Berthoud. The project will replace the span wire traffic signal with poles and mast arms.
“Span wire traffic signals use older equipment and technology, ” said CDOT Traffic Operations Engineer Larry Haas. “The new signal will require less maintenance and will operate more efficiently. ”
In order to construct the new signal, the existing signal will be removed and stops signs will be installed. At 10 a.m. tomorrow, the existing signal will go into four-way red flash for the weekend in order to get motorists accustomed to a four-way stop. Then, at 9 a m. on Monday, September 20, the signal will be shut off and stops signs will be in place. The intersection will function as a four-way stop until the new signal is activated.
“It is extremely important for motorists to be aware that the traffic signal will be temporarily shut off and the intersection will be treated as a four-way stop, ” added Haas. “Motorists should approach the intersection slowly and with caution as the traffic condition has changed at this intersection. ”
CDOT anticipates that the new traffic signal will be operational by the end of October 2010, weather permitting. More information will be released once the new traffic signal has been installed.
Interface Communications, CO is the contractor for this $173,000 project which is scheduled to be complete by end of October 2010. The project is being funded through Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER), which was passed by the Colorado Legislator in 2009.
