Spartans win second straight in dominating fashion
By Dan Karpiel
44-3 was the final score of the Berthoud/Ft. Lupton football game Friday night at Max Marr Field. It wasn’t even that close. The Spartans dominated the Blue Devils in winning their second consecutive game and are now 2-2 on the season. Berthoud was without question the faster, smarter and better-coached team Friday night.
Aside from a minor blip in the third quarter when the Spartans were first and goal on the Ft. Lupton one-yard line and turned the ball over on downs, Berthoud played a nearly flawless game. “I’m really pleased with the way we played on both sides of the ball,” said Berthoud Head Coach Dan McGinn after the victory. However McGinn was careful not to say this was easy win and added, “A lot of hard work and a lot of focus on our kids’ part go into this (wins).”
The Spartan offense scored seven touchdowns on the night and had only two punts. Junior tailback Chase Fraser has been Berthoud’s most productive player this season and Friday night was no exception. Fraser scored four touchdowns on the night; three rushing and one on a nine-yard reception from quarterback Zach Ruebesam. Berthoud’s offense was assisted by the stellar play of their defensive counterparts. After allowing Ft. Lupton to score a field goal with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter, the Spartan defense played shutout football for remainder of the game. Berthoud’s defense and special teams were so strong Friday night they afforded the offense five drives which began in Ft. Lupton territory.
Berthoud was particularly dominant in the first half, at one point scoring touchdowns on four straight possessions. After an offensive series where the Spartans went three-and-out, they seemed to find their groove. The defense allowed Ft. Lupton to move the ball deep into Spartan territory but the Blue Devils’ field goal attempt sailed wide left and the Spartans took over on their own 20-yard line. They would proceed to march 80 yards down the field and take a 14-3 lead with 0:09 left in the first quarter.
Berthoud scored on each of their three second-quarter possessions. Aside from three missed extra points from senior place-kicker Colton Moore, who had not missed a kick going into Friday night, the Spartans played perfect football and took a 32-3 lead into halftime. In second half, the Spartans began all five drives in Blue Devil territory and added two more touchdowns.
“Our young kids are coming along and we’re getting some great leadership from the older kids,” Coach McGinn said in a post-game interview. McGinn was insistent that even with the big win Friday night the goal is to continue improving and stated, “It’s our job as coaches to make sure we’re learning from each game…and focus on things to make our kids better.” Credit Coach McGinn and his staff as the Spartans have improved in each of their first four games and are hitting their stride in time for conference play, which begins in two weeks.
Next Friday night Berthoud will make the long trip up I-76 for a meeting with former Tri-Valley Conference Rival Ft. Morgan. The Spartans return to Max Marr Field for a homecoming date with Silver Creek on October 8.
