Explanation: Would the Rosette Nebula [5] by any other name [6] look as sweet [7]? The bland New General Catalog [8] designation of NGC 2237 [9] doesn’t appear to diminish the appearance of this [10] flowery emission nebula [11]. Inside the nebula lies an open cluster [12] of bright young stars designated NGC 2244 [13]. These stars formed about four million years ago [14] from the nebular material and their stellar winds [15] are clearing a hole in the nebula’s center, insulated by a layer of dust [16] and hot gas. Ultraviolet light [17] from the hot cluster stars causes the surrounding nebula to glow [18]. The Rosette Nebula [19] spans about 100 light-years [20] across, lies about 5000 light-years away [21], and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation [22] of the Unicorn (Monoceros [23]).
