Marie Andrade Allison receives DAR Good Citizen award

Marie Elise Andrade Allison was selected as Berthoud High School’s recipient of Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award for 2011. The Namaqua Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented awards to several area students at its February 9 Student Recognition Tea. The winners, one from each area high school were the winners in the DAR Good Citizen Program and Scholarship Contest.
The annual event is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship and is open to all senior class students. The Good Citizen’s Award is given to a selected senior in each of the participating high schools. The participants have been selected by their schools because of the qualities of Dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality); Service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); Leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and Patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation) to an outstanding degree. The award is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship in our upcoming leaders. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools.
The Scholarship contest is composed of two parts. Seventy percent of the score is the students personal component, describing how they manifest the qualities of a good citizen, their official Grade transcript and two letters of recommendation. The remaining thirty percent is an essay. The essay is completed in one sitting, with a two-hour time limit, no computers or reference materials. The topic for this year’s essay was “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving it,” in which the student was to describe how the creation of our nation from many nationalities has or has not resulted in more than one American Heritag

In addition to receiving this honor, Miss Allison is a member of the Berthoud Bridge Between Show Choir and is the Boulder County Fair and Rodeo Queen for 2011.
