Boys and Girls Teams Lose to Beetdiggers
By Dan Karpiel
The Berthoud High boys basketball team had no trouble finding the rim in their Friday night game with the Brush Beetdiggers. Getting the ball through the net for points, however, was a different story.
The Spartans lost 48-42 to their 3A Patriot League rivals thanks in large part to a dismal 14-for-58 shooting effort. The loss drops Berthoud to 6-5 on the season with a 2-2 mark in conference play.
The Spartans were able to match the Beetdiggers in baskets made from both inside and outside of the three-point line; each team sank nine two-pointers and five three-pointers. Yet Berthoud had to take 21 more shots than did their opponents to reach those totals. The six-point differential in the final score came from the free-throw line where Brush bested Berthoud 15 to nine.
“They gave us a lot of difficulty in zone, we didn’t get a lot around the rim and so we had to shoot threes and I don’t mind that because I think we’re a team that can shoot but tonight it let us down which is going to happen from time to time,” said Berthoud High Head Coach Pete Scheck after the game.
Berthoud was not only out-shot by Brush but they were out-rebounded as well. The Beetdiggers finished the game with a 41-26 advantage off the glass. While both teams struggled from the floor, Brush’s size advantage proved decisive as their 25 offensive rebounds provided the visiting team with more than twice as many opportunities for second-chance points.
Despite being topped in many statistical categories, Berthoud, to their credit, played hard throughout the contest. The Spartans ended the first period down 15-13 and could have lost the game before halftime as Brush began the second period with a 7-0 run. Yet Berthoud’s defense stiffened, allowing the Beetdiggers to score only once in the final four minutes and Berthoud junior Tucker Skoric drained a pair of baskets to cut the Brush lead to 25-18 at halftime.
After struggling to find any rhythm shooting the ball for much of the third period, the Spartans were able to put together a 5-0 run to close the period and cut the Brush lead to 33-26.
The fourth period was easily Berthoud’s best of the night. Spartan senior forward Greg Hutchins gave his a team a boost by draining a three-pointer while getting fouled and making good on the subsequent free-throw. Berthoud was able to cut Brush’s 11-point lead down to five, 41-46 with 57 seconds remaining, but their efforts were too little, too late.
“We didn’t decide to start playing until about four-minutes left, it took us that long to start pulling that effort out of ourselves to deal with them,” Scheck remarked following the game.
Skoric led Berthoud in scoring with 12, followed by senior point guard Zach Ruebesam who contributed 11 and Hutchins added 9 to go with his team-high seven rebounds.
The Berthoud girls basketball team also struggled against Brush. Berthoud sophomore Kendall Baker led all players with 19 points, including a pair of three-pointers, but it was not enough as the Lady Spartans fell 51-37. The loss drops Berthoud to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in Patriot League play.
