GOP: Ladies Keep Your Legs Shut

In four articles today and three yesterday, Care2 takes aim at what it considers an attack by the GOP and clergy on women’s rights. Jessica Pieklo’s anger is palpable in her articles in todays issue.
Ladies keep your legs shut is of course precipitated by Rick Santorum’s funder Foster Friess’s comments about using Bayer Aspirin as a birth control pill. In typical “good-ole-boy” fashion he seems clueless that anyone, expecially women, should be offended by his insensitive remarks. Pieklo’s other article examines the GOP as being culture war crazy and she concludes with the Virginia GOP attack on Medicaid funding.
The contempt for women was palpable during Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-CA) sham of an oversight hearing on whether or not keeping access to contraception available for women was an attack on religious liberty. Here’s a hint: not even Justice Scalia thinks it is . Beside the utter lack of a voice, of parity in participation let alone diversity of opinion, accessing birth control was likened to serving pork at a kosher deli from a witnessed deemed qualified to offer testimony while a female Catholic law student was told she didn’t have anything to add to the proceedings.
Then came Rick Santorum funder and billionaire investor Foster Friess letting MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell know that this whole birth control debate was really no big deal because, back in Friess’s day women just kept their legs shut.
Here’s the exchange: … Read More
Morning Mix: GOP Remains Culture War Crazy

Well, it was another big day for the GOP. And by big I mean ridiculous.
First there was the “oversight” hearing by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) that were apparently about how bishops and orthodox rabbis feel oppressed when insurance companies make contraceptives affordable and accessible. The hearing was such a joke Democrats left in protest . Not only were no women invited to participate in the first panel, but Issa had the courage to suggest women’s voices weren’t needed because he was holding a hearing on religious freedom, not women’s issues. Well okay then.
Thankfully Foster Friess, the money behind the Santorum surge, jumped in to suggest life would be so much simpler for everyone if women just kept their legs shut . Of course he later suggested he was “joking ” and that the viewers, and presumably a flabbergasted Andrea Mitchell, just didn’t get the “context” of the joke.
All of this focus on women troubles distracted from the other big news which is the economy is most certainly on the rebound . Which totally explains why the Republicans have gone full-hog with the culture war. … Read More

Did you know that Planned Parenthood’s goal is to turn kids into sex addicts just like a drug dealer’s goal is to create drug addicts?
That’s right. Planned Parenthood is really just a scheme to get kids addicted to sex so that they can sell them birth control, STD testing, and abortions. Cha-cing!
That’s exactly what a video from the American Life League describes in an effort to get supporters to defund Planned Parenthood.
This ignorance of this video really speaks for itself. (Quick, watch the video now! It’s already becoming hard to track down on youtube!) … Read more:

Leave it to the Republicans. Only the Republicans would have the *temerity* to call an oversight hearing to discuss the birth control mandate and, in two full panels of testimony, offered two women. Two.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) , chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called the hearing and determined who was qualified to offer testimony and who was not. Apparently, women are not qualified to offer more than just a token opinion on the balance of personal health care decisions and religious exercise. But that’s hardly a surprise now is it?
Among the witnesses rejected by Issa was Sandra Fluke a third year student at the Catholic Georgetown Law School who proposed testimony on the cost of contraception without insurance coverage (at least $3000 a year) and the struggle to keep up with that cost.
And then she wanted to share stories like this:
“A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome and has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy. At many schools, it wouldn’t be, and under Senator Blunt’s amendment, Senator Rubio’s bill, or Representative Fortenbeny’s bill, there’s no requirement that an exception be made for such medical needs.” … Read More
Yesterdays issue dealt with the Church’s war on the government. The fact that the current “Culture War” is trumped up are the facts as presented in NewsWeek magazine’s latest issue:
To make the Republican rhetoric even more absurd, the precompromise version of the Obama insurance rule is already the law in two of the biggest states, New York and California, as Linda Greenhouse has noted in The New York Times. Moreover, as Nick Baumann has documented in Mother Jones, contraception has already been legally required in all health-insurance plans since the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled in 2000 that omitting it was unconstitutional sex discrimination. (The Bush administration did nothing to oppose the ruling.) And yet Pastor Rick Warren said last week that he would be prepared to go to jail over the Obama rule (making one wonder why, as a resident of California, he isn’t sitting in a cell already). So with this new compromise, Obama has actually increased religious freedom, not restricted it. All of which makes one wonder exactly how genuine the current outrage is—or whether it is part and parcel of a political campaign against Obama rather than a defense of religious freedom.”

For those surprised about the recent fervor over Obama’s contraception coverage decision, a look at its deep roots.
Republicans for Planned Parenthood last week issued a call for nominations for the 2012 Barry Goldwater award, an annual prize awarded to a Republican legislator who has acted to protect women’s health and rights. Past recipients include Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, who this week endorsed President Obama’s solution for insuring full coverage of the cost of contraception without exceptions, even for employees of religiously affiliated institutions. And that may tell us all we need to know about why President Obama has the upper hand in a debate over insurance that congressional Tea Partiers have now widened to include anyone who seeks an exemption.
It’s a long time ago, but it is worth remembering that conservative avatar Goldwater was in his day an outspoken supporter of women’s reproductive freedom — a freethinker who voted his conscience over the protests of Catholic bishops and all others who tried to claim these matters as questions of conscientious liberty and not sensible social policy. With Goldwater on his side, Obama sees a clear opening for skeptics wary of the extremism that has captured Republican hopefuls in thrall to the fundamentalist base that controls the GOP presidential primary today. Holding firm on family planning — even if it means taking on the Catholic hierarchy and other naysayers by offering a technical fix that would have insurers cover costs instead of the churches themselves — is a calculated political strategy by the Obama campaign, not a blunder as it has been characterized by many high powered pundits, including progressives like Mark Shields of PBS and E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post . … Read More

At least one Catholic bishop has decided simply whipping the Republican leadership into a frenzy over birth control coverage isn’t enough. Walker Nickless, the Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City is warning whoever will listen that the contraception mandate in health care reform is literally a plot by the Devil that required “violent opposition.”
The comment came on a webcast hosted by the conservative Family Research Council. … Read More

The first clear front in this war is the battle over contraception funding as the Bishops openly campaign from the pulpit, lobby members of Congress, and attack the Obama administration for the right to let any employer opt out of covering any medical treatment he or she disagreed with as a matter or personal faith.
This philosophy has now infected the review and renewal of the Violence Against Women Act as Republicans, for the first time ever, vote against protecting domestic violence victims because the bill extends protections to the LGBT community and undocumented immigrants.
And there’s more where that came from.
The Bishops plan to work with other religious organizations, including evangelical Christians, on an election-year public relations campaign to rally against a laundry list of government measures which they believe intrude on religious liberty.
How will this massive election-year pr campaign be coordinated? A SuperPAC, I’m sure. Just wait. It’s the next logical step for the Bishops here. … Read More
