Fire Crews Rescue Truck Driver in Roll Over Crash
At 7:18 am today (10/25/2012) the Greeley Fire Department was called to a traffic accident at the intersection of Highway 85 and “O” Street, north of Greeley. Arriving fire crews quickly called for more assistance after seeing that the crash involved four vehicles, one being a trash truck which had rolled over and landed on top of a car, both of which were on the top edge of a 50 foot icy, snow covered, very steep embankment.
Fire crews soon realized that the driver of the trash truck was trapped in the cab of the unstable truck. They immediately called for a heavy duty tow truck, so that the crashed trash truck could be stabilized and the victim safety removed. Fire crews were able to communicate with him by yelling through the windshield and determined he was amazingly unhurt. Once the tow truck attached a cable to the truck to prevent it from sliding down the embankment and potentially crushing the driver, firefighters were able to cut out the trucks windshield and free the driver.
The car that the truck came to rest upon had three passengers, two of them children in child safety seats, in the back of the vehicle. Amazingly, all three of them were also unhurt, but transported to the hospital as a precaution to be examined. Fire crews also assessed the scene to ensure no hazardous materials or fluids had been spilled.
