Heat is On Holiday Crackdown Continues through January 2

Denver, CO (December 02, 2011) – Heavy DUI enforcement in Colorado over Thanksgiving week netted 435 drivers suspected of drinking and driving. The arrest numbers are up this holiday season, compared with the same time period last year when 363 drivers were arrested for DUI. According to preliminary reports, there were five people killed in crashes in the state over the Thanksgiving weekend and four of the fatalities involved suspected drunk drivers.

“It’s unfortunate anytime we have traffic fatalities, but it is especially hard to see during the holiday season,” said Col. James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Plan ahead now for your holiday office parties and family gatherings — Designate a sober driver, take public transportation or call a cab. Don’t make the mistake these 435 drivers made over Thanksgiving. Be responsible and find a safe ride home. And always remember to wear your seat belt.”

The special holiday Heat is On enforcement continues with 76 law enforcement agencies and the Colorado State Patrol planning increased DUI patrols, saturation patrols and other targeted enforcement efforts through Jan. 2, 2012.

Last year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, 1,556 people were arrested for DUI and 18 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes.

Colorado drivers can find tips on how to plan a safe and sober holiday party, find overnight parking locations and public transportation options by visiting www.PlanAheadColorado.com. CDOT has also launched a new Facebook page (facebook.com/ColoradoDOT) with an interactive game featuring an office holiday party with Santa’s elves. Facebook users can actually become the Designated Driver elf in the game. As an incentive, everyone who plays the interactive Elf Game will be entered to win free ski lift tickets to Arapahoe Basin. Two tickets will be given away each week.
