On March 19, three students from Turner Middle School will travel to Denver to compete in the 71st Colorado State Spelling Bee. After placing in the top six at the Thompson School District spelling bee, Hanna Stippich, Olivia Conde and Ken Kubik have been given a chance to compete for the title of State Champion. The winner of the State Bee will be given an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee held on June 1 and 2 in Washington D.C. Seven students from Colorado have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in since the first competition was held in 1925. This year’s contestants hope to bring that number to eight.
The Colorado State Bee will be held at the Colorado Convention Center on March 19. The event begins with a written test in which spellers vie to qualify for the oral round. The oral round will begin shortly thereafter.
