9Health Fair Coming: Do You Know Your Numbers?

By Claudia Todd
Lions Club

This April marks the 30th anniversary of the 9Health Fair and the 20 plus years that Berthoud Lions Clubs have hosted the fair at Berthoud High School.

This year’s 9Health Fair will be on April 18 at Berthoud High School and has scheduled nearly 100 volunteers to serve an anticipated 700 fair participants as they take advantage of free or low-cost health screenings.

In a time of economic recession, 9Health Fair is emphasizing just how important it is to “know your numbers.” These numbers reflect the results of a blood chemistry screening (blood draw) that provides a baseline check on your overall health ($30). These screenings can help you and your doctor monitor your health and prevent health issues from becoming emergencies.

Men can take advantage of the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood draw that helps determine the presence of prostate cancer ($25). Free digital prostate exam by a doctor will also be available.

Blood count screening is also offered to check your white blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin levels and blood-clotting abilities. This test can help determine your body’s ability to fight infection, anemia, liver disease and certain cancers ($15).

Also offered this year is a new take-home/mail-in colon cancer screening kit. This new and improved test has been proven to be very accurate at detecting human blood in the stool ($20).

The following screenings are available at no charge: vision, blood pressure, breast screening by a female medical professional, foot health, eye health, mental health, height/weight, body mass index and hearing.

New this year at the Berthoud site is the finger stick glucose screening. This free test identifies an individual’s fasting blood glucose levels. There will also be materials for education on recognizing and understanding the signs and symptoms of diabetes.

There will also be the opportunity to ask a physician about anything relating to the screenings.

Take advantage of pre-registration this Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11, at the Lions Club Depot at Second Street and Massachusetts Avenue. The hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Please bring payment for whatever fee-based optional tests you will want at the 9Health Fair.

Take advantage of the huge savings on blood work and the many free screenings at the Berthoud 9Health Fair at Berthoud High School (north entrance) on Saturday, April 18. The fair is open 7 a.m. and closes promptly at noon. Remember that the blood draws and finger stick glucose tests require a 12-hour fast from food but be sure to take any medications and drink lots of water in order to assure an easy blood draw.
