A Gift for Fathers: Good Health, Peace of Mind

Giving dad a little peace of mind when it comes to his health could be the best Father’s Day gift this year. That’s the message from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains during June’s Men’s Health Month.

Spokesperson Monica McCafferty said her organization has experienced a 22-percent increase in visits from male clients during 2008 compared to 2007. That’s a good start, she said, but men are still less likely to seek preventive health care, even though help is available.

“It’s crucial that men know they can turn to Planned Parenthood, particularly in this tough economic time, for affordable reproductive and basic health care,” McCafferty said.

Contrary to some public perceptions that the organization serves only women, McCafferty said the increase in male clients shows that Colorado men do depend on organizations such as Planned Parenthood for many health services.

“They come to us for various services, such as testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, cholesterol and high blood pressure tests, and cancer screenings,” she said.

It remains important for men to get tested as a matter of public health. “STDs continue to pose a serious public health threat in this country, and it affects both sexes,” she said.

Other health issues for men to be aware of: colon cancer, heart disease and sexually transmitted diseases, she added.
