Berthoud Boys 65—Fort Morgan 44

The Spartans and the Fort Morgan Mustangs have similar records this year but you would not have know that from the first half of tonight’s game. The Spartans did not give the few Mustang fans that made the trip much to cheer about.

Berthoud took the ball from the tip and Greg Hutchins made the first basket and Fort Morgan quickly evened the score. Maly put the Spartans ahead again and the Mustangs came back to tie 4-4, but that was all the scoring they would do for a while. The Berthoud squad seemed to do everything right. Nearly everyone scored and with 3 minutes gone in the came Berthoud was ahead 10-4.

The Mustangs seemed to have a difficult time hanging onto the ball. Berthoud was helped by turnovers and steals, though the aggressive Fort Morgan squad got their share of steals too. Shane Hart made it 25-7 with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. The Mustangs brought the ball in and took a shot from near mid court that went through for a 3 pointer. First quarter score 25-10.

It looked like the second quarter was going to be a rout as Maly ran up 10 points on 4 baskets and 2 free throws. Then Greg Hutchins added four more and the Spartans were up 39-11. Alex Santos was 2 for 2 on his free throw and led 41-13. The Mustangs finally woke up and scored 5 points as 6’8” Andrew Rebol put in a 3-point as the quarter wound down. The halftime score was 42-18.

Berthoud started fast in the third period as Maly scored within the first 10 seconds. But this was not to be a repeat of the first half. The Mustang apparently had a good pep talk at the half and come out playing. Play was aggressive and exciting. There were lots of turnovers, both steals and “loose balls.” The ball changed hands so quickly at times that it was reminiscent of the middle school games. The Mustangs outscored Berthoud 14 to 11 in the third period and both teams tallied 12 in the final period.

Leading scorers in game were Joel Maly with 25 and Greg Hutchins with 17. Mathiesen, Ruebesam and Hutchins each made 3 point goals. Maly led the rebounds with 2 offensive and 5 defensive. The team had 15 steals and 16 turnovers.
