Berthoud voters choose new trustees [1]

Unofficial results show 2 ballot measures pass; 4 new trustees and new mayor to serve on town board

BERTHOUD — More than 1,000 residents voted in the Berthoud election Tuesday [2]either in person or by absentee ballot, according to unofficial election results [3], and they chose four new trustees, a new mayor and passed two ballot issues.

Pete Cowdin, who was running unopposed for mayor, received 737 votes.

For trustee positions: Jeff Hindman received 586 votes; Brian Laak received 494, William Karspeck received 493; and Kelly Dunkelberger received 479. The trustee positions are all four-year terms except for Dunkelberger’s, which is a two-year term.

Both ballot issues also passed: making a tax set to expire in 2016 for public safety permanent — up to 3 mills — and a 3 percent excise lodging tax. The public safety tax received 655 votes in favor of the measure with 348 opposed, and the lodging tax received 646 votes in favor with 352 opposed.

Dorian Ryan, a Berthoud resident and supporter of Karspeck, said voting in local elections is important.

“All politics is local and it’s local where it matters,” Ryan said, adding that especially in a small town such as Berthoud, elections can come down to a few votes. …
