Fort Collins Interagency Dispatch requested firefighting resources from the Berthoud Fire Protection District to assist with structure protection and firefighting efforts with the Fern Lake Fire. The Fern Lake Fire has been burning in Rocky Mountain National Park since October 9 and is currently reported 20 % containment. The fire has burned more than 3,600 acres of pine beetle – impacted forest.

Over the weekend, the fire doubled in size due to strong winds and continued dry weather. The fire has forced the evacuation of nearly 600 residents and placed more than 1,000 households on notice to be prepared for an immediate evacuation if needed.

Berthoud sent three Wildland engines to the scene staffed by a total of nine Wildland firefighters. Engine crews consisted of both permanent career and seasonal Wildland firefighters. Each year, the District hires seasonal Wildland firefighters to compliment their career and volunteer structural/Wildland firefighting staff.

Engines, Wildland firefighters and support staff from the District have been deployed to more than a dozen Wildland fires, in 2012, throughout the State of Colorado and neighboring states. In recent Wildland fire seasons, District resources have been deployed to Wildland fires in Georgia, Florida, California, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico and the Dakota’s.

Boulder County and Estes Valley Fire Protection District have imposed an open burning ban to minimize the risk of additional fires. Due to weather conditions and dry fuels; the Berthoud Fire Protection District is cautiously reviewing requests for final approval for “Open Burning Permits” submitted that have been previously approved by the Larimer County Department of Public Health and Environment.
