Berthoud Library Offers Extended Hours

By Sandy Barnes
Berthoud Recorder

Beginning Friday, Jan.2, the Berthoud Public Library will be open to residents throughout the daytime and two evenings a week. Residents can now walk through the doors at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday. The library will remain open until 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Closing time will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

“We’re glad to get back to this schedule,” said Library Director Sara Wright.

The recent success of the special election in which voters approved funding for the Berthoud Community Library District made possible the extended operational hours. On Nov. 4, voters heartily approved a 2.4 mill levy for the library district that serves Berthoud area residents.

During the previous election in 2007, the library district received voter support, but not the funding. Because of the resulting funding shortage, the library experienced a reduction in hours and services and cut backs in spending on books and other materials in 2008.

The passage of the mill levy will enable the library to be open more hours and also double the book budget, said Wright. Services including DVD and audio books will also be reinstated, along with a brand new format featuring self-contained units the size of iPods, which can be plugged into earphones.

When selecting new books for the library, Wright said she and her staff pay attention to the interests of patrons. “There’s a really varied reading interest,” she remarked, with pleasure reading, both fact and fiction, popular with readers. The library has a large collection of mysteries and historical fiction by current authors among its offerings.

Many people who come to the library head to the computers to access the Internet, Wright added. To better serve the community, the library is upgrading its Internet service to a higher speed.

“You tend to judge a library by its physical size,” said Wright while discussing the scope of services offered. However, the Berthoud library coordinates services with the state library to access a large database of materials including those at the University of Colorado and Colorado State University.
