The score board may have showed 42 points for the Roosevelt Roughriders and 21 for the Spartans after the duel meet on Thursday night in Johnstown, but spectators on both sides of the stands were on the edges of their seats throughout the meet. The Spartans were expecting a tough match with Roosevelt , whose line up boasts eleven state ranked wrestlers, but Berthoud rose to the challenge by wrestling tough and showing they belong in top tier of the 4A wrestling teams.
Two Berthoud Spartans, Casey Couch (189) and Billy Schump (hwt) pinned their opponents early in the second periods. Alex Sadlo, ranked #4, worked hard for a pin, but Roosevelt’s, Mason Marick (#6) clung to the mat so Sadlo had to settle for a 10-6 decision. In one of toughest matches of the night, Spartan Robby Workman and Roosevelt’s Presley Papacheck battled it out for six minutes. Workman scored with a take down but Papacheck come out on top in a 3-2 decision win.
Spartans Marcus Lucero (140), Jesse Lyman (145), Cory Ellis (160), Josh Atkinson (171) and J.T. Pickert (215) lost in decisions against Zach Legino, Jeff Klellen, Blake Nygren, Juan Sanchez and Travis Carey, respectively. Lucero, Lyman, Atkinson and Pickert all scored points and went the distance against Roosevelt’s stacked lineup.
Tylor Bethel received a forfeit at 119 and Berthoud gave up six points by forfeiting at 125. Freshmen, Alex Kingsley and Austin Bending and Sophmore, Nick Fleegan took falls.
