Berthoud Wrestlers Come Up Short in Soeby Spartan Classic

Some of the Berthoud wrestlers dyed their hair reddish or blond. Others cut theirs down to a buzz, while a few others had multi-colored hair — some red, some blue and some blond all over. If Saturday’s Soeby Spartan Classic was a fashion show, Berthoud would’ve won hands down. But it wasn’t.

Even though the Spartans placed eight wrestlers in the championship finals of its annual tournament — well more than any school — it was Greeley Central with its success in the consolation finals that stole the title right out from underneath Berthoud.

With six victories in the consolation bracket to go along with three in the championship round, the Wildcats scored 190 points, edging Berthoud by four points for the team title. Eaton came in third with 130 points, followed by Rampart, Platte Valley, Mountain View and Highland.

“We knew we were going to be real close just because of the amount of kids we put in for third and fourth and first and second,” said Greeley Central head coach Eric Penfold, whose team trailed by 4.5 points entering the final round. “We knew it would be a close round to the end. We just talked to the guys that every point counted, every last point and you know what it paid off. We got the team win today.”

Berthoud struck first in the final round with championship victories at 103 and 112 pounds, respectively, for Tylor Bethel and Robbie Workman. But the Spartans won just two of its other six championship finals and lost both of its consolation final matches.

“That’s where all these tournaments are won on the lower side,” Berthoud head coach Scott Pickert said. “You know kids coming back are earning some quality points in the consolation and they (Greeley Central) did a little better job than we did. We definitely left some points on the table here and there. We had our opportunities, and unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”

It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying. Victories by Alex Sadlo at 130 pounds and Marcus Lucero at 145 kept the Spartans in it. Sadlo scored a pinfall in 1 minute, 34 seconds over Eaton’s Darrius Lohr, while Lucero overcame an early takedown to defeat Greeley Central’s Mikail Mekhraliyev in 1:20.

“I knew I needed to score as many points for the team as I could,” Lucero said.

The Spartans won two of three matches in the championship finals against Greeley Central wrestlers — Bethol’s win at 103 came at the expense of the Wildcats’ Logan Crisel. But Greeley Central scored a big win at 171 by Brice Wolf over Josh Atkinson and closed out the match at heavyweight.

While the Wildcats’ AJ Poland was pinning Frankie Barrientes of Highland in the consolation finals, Berthoud’s Jared Wikre got caught in overtime by Rampart’s Kyle Starling in what, eventually, proved to be the difference in the final score.

Despite the loss by Wikre and an overtime defeat for 125-pounder Graeden Sadlo, Pickert was pleased with the effort.

“We went for it there at the end and it didn’t work out. But I still like the aggressiveness he (Wikre) was going for. I’ll take that any day,” Pickert said. “We’ll just use these losses. Hopefully, they’ll burn, make them work harder and light a fire under them a little bit.”

Saturday’s tournament paid tribute to former Berthoud wrestler Kurtis Soeby, who died in an automobile accident in May 2005. The meet also paid tribute to Staff Sgt. Justin L. Bauer, a former Berthoud wrestler who died while serving with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq earlier this month.
