Berthoud Wrestlers have a busy week

By Denise Schump

This week was a busy week for the Spartan Wrestling team with the last home duel meet of the season against Fort Morgan’s Mustangs on Thursday and a road trip to Security/ Widefield for the annual Gladiator Duels meet in Colorado Springs on Saturday. The Spartans came up on top against the Mustangs with a score of 41 to 34. Thursday was also senior night and both senior Spartan wrestlers chalked up points for the team with Marcus Lucero edging out Fort Morgan’s Derek Gray 6-5, and Billy Schump taking a forfeit at heavy weight.  The forfeits evened out on the rosters with Fort Morgan also giving up two weights and the Spartans empty this week at 130 and 135. Juniors, Robbie Workman and J.T. Pickert pinned their opponents, and Casey Couch had a big win with a technical pin early in the second period.  Cory Ellis also came out ahead (15-9) against Ben Hochanadel from Fort Morgan.

On Saturday the Berthoud grapplers lined up against several other teams from around the state for the Gladiator Duels. Berthoud showed up with a full roster for the first match against Woodland Park and won, 71-3. The next match-up against Pine Creek’s J.V. squad ended with the Spartan grapplers running up a big score 51 to 21. The Spartans came up with big wins in their next two duals against two other 4A schools, Widefield (45-27) and Pueblo East (48-28), Unfortunately, Berthoud team was stopped short by Pine Creek’s Varsity Squad in the last duel of the day in which the Spartans fell hard and heavy. The final score was Pine creek 53, Berthoud 15.

After all the dust settled, the Berthoud team had a productive and positive day with the team taking second place out of the ten team duel tournament and some major individual wins. Wrestlers Robbie Workman  (130), Alex Sadlo (135), and Casey Couch (189) were undefeated for the day.

Next week the Spartans travel to Sterling to makeup a duel regional meet which was postponed early in the season because of snow, and then on to Eaton for the last tournament of the year before the regional tournament hosted by Greeley Central.
