Sixteen wrestlers from the Berthoud Wrestling Club made their way to Greeley on Saturday to compete in the Metro Jr. Wrestling League Championship. The event, held at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion on the UNC campus drew wrestlers from all over Northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. The league has 34 participating clubs and over 1,500 wrestlers age 4 to 14.
The Berthoud Wrestling Club has been operating for more than a decade and has nearly 50 boys involved in the sport. The Berthoud contingent performed well, with 10 boys receiving trophies for placing in the top six in their class.
The top placement for Berthoud was Chad Ellis, who took home the championship trophy in the 12-year-old, 97 pound weight class. It appears that wrestling those 4-H calves all year is good conditioning for the wrestling sport.
