Axel Ayala scored twice, one off an assist from Michael Berra and the other from Luis Tavison, in a 2-0 Berthoud boys soccer victory over Sterling on Thursday in the 3A Region 6 conference opener.
There was a lot of back-and-forth work between the teams in the first half before Berthoud responded with two goals in the second half.
“We worked hard and it paid off,” Berthoud head coach John Barron said. “The boys started to trust each other. We just need to continue with our creativity and movement and we will have a successful rest of the season.”
Unfortunately, that success wasn’t there Tuesday night in a 3-0 loss at Weld Central, which scored a pair of second-half goals to put the game away. The loss dropped Berthoud to 2-3, 1-1 in conference play.

The win was welcomed after Thursday’s 4-3 loss at Frederick in which the host Warriors won it with a walkoff home run by Lauren Rivera in the bottom of the ninth.
