Berthoud High Class of 2009
After giving away three scholarships to last year’s graduating seniors, the Berthoud High School Scholarship and Endowment Committee is determined to reach out to even more students this school year. To accomplish this, a group of Berthoud High School students, as well as local advisors, are asking for contributions of any amount from local residents and businesses.
The money they collect will not only benefit the graduating Class of 2009 but also future BHS graduating seniors. Whatever funds remains at the end of this school year will be put into an endowment fund in hopes of continuing to provide local students with scholarships to help offset college costs.
Dale Marshall started the program in 2008, with help from Gary Maggi, Jennie Koolstra, and the BHS counseling office. The endowment is in memory of Mark Marshall, a 1987 BHS graduate, who died of cancer in 2001.
The premise was to create an endowment to help future BHS graduates with scholarship money to assist with the escalating costs of continuing education. The Town of Berthoud showed its support by proclaiming February as Berthoud High School Scholarship and Endowment month. This year, the students have taken over running BHSSE; they are organizing, fundraising, and choosing scholarship recipients themselves.
The entire amount of funds raised will be given to students. The Mark Marshall Foundation and RE/MAX Town and Country Realty are paying all of the administrative costs so 100 percent of the donations can be used for the endowment.
Tax-deductible donations for this program can be sent to Berthoud High School, c/o BHSSE, 850 Spartan Ave., Berthoud, CO 80513.
