Derek Gwin completes basic training

    Derek Gwin, a 2010 graduate of Berthoud High School recently graduated from Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Airman Gwin completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Boy Scout Plans to build Public Bench

By Thomas N. Kevin Yannutz, after just three years as a Boy Scout, is working on becoming an Eagle Scout. To earn the rank of Eagle Scout requires a minimum of 21 merit badges and the planning, managing, and directing of an extensive community project. Yannutz came up with the idea for his project after he noticed several parents waiting for their children near the Berthoud Pool and having no place to sit. Tragedy in Berthoud

Slightly less that a year after the death of Alex Sabados, Turner Middle School students face yet another tragedy. The Sheriffs Department said that they were called to rural Berthoud on Friday morning to the scene of an unattended death. In a letter sent to parents, Principal Bill Siebers had this to say, Dear TMS Parents/Guardians It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that one of our Turner Students, Nicole Bauer,  passed away this morning. Dr. Robert Bruce (Doc) Fickel, DDS March 30, 1912 – March 9, 2011 Berthoud lost one of its most beloved residents today when R. Bruce (Doc) Fickel died this morning (March 9) in Longmont United Hospital. Doc was born to Lee and Lottie Fickel in Edina, Missouri, on March 30 1912. According to Doc, the Fickel’s were minority Protestant Republicans in a Catholic Democratic town. He remained a staunch Republican his whole life. Dump truck loses balance

    Fortunately, no one was injured when this truck tipped over on Friday. The truck from Vialpando trucking was delivering 25 tons of gravel to the Berthoud Street Department facility on Welch Avenue when the incident occurred. According to employees on the scene, the trucks can not fit into to the compound so the normal procedure is to unload in front of the building and then use the front loader to move the gravel into the yard. Tuesday, February 1 A vehicle ran into a fence in the 400 Block of East County Road 8. No injuries were reported. An injured cat was returned to its owner in the 600 block of Sunnywood Place. A 1980 Pontiac was reported stolen from the 200 block of Welch Avenue. A resident in the 200 block of Second Street saw footprints in the snow and reported having a prowler. According to an employee, agents of the Colorado Department of Revenue entered the Loveland Schmidt's Olde Time Bakery this morning and locked the doors and then asked the customers to leave. Employees were give time to put food back into freezers and coolers and then they too had to leave. Apparently, the deal struck last year to allow the popular restaurant to reopen had fallen through.
