The Title is Sheriff – Not King

The Title is Sheriff – Not King

By Jim Alderden Larimer County Sheriff I am a firm believer that the sheriff is the highest law enforcement authority in the land and I have previously published my views on this esteemed Office. The Office of Sheriff has a long and valued history as the "protector of the shire" and is the only elected law enforcement officer making him directly accountable to the people. However, there are limitations on the powers and authority granted to the sheriff. A certain former ... Full Story

Budget 101 with Sheriff Alderden

Larimer County Sheriff, Jim Alderden, presented “Sheriff’s Budget 101” to an interested audience on Friday evening. Alderden was pleasantly surprised at the number of people who showed up. Last year’s attendance was three he said, this year two dozen people showed up including department employees and of course the five candidates for the Sheriff’s job. In last week’s Bulls-eye the sheriff said, “It has been painfully obvious from listening to the campaign rhetoric that most ... Full Story

Larimer Master Gardeners on deadheading and grasshoppers

The Art of deadheading By: Charleen Barr Colorado State University Extension Master Gardener in Larimer County Many gardeners do not realize deadheading is an art rather than a chore. Some chores that are tedious for one gardener may seem pleasant to another, but deadheading flowers just requires a positive attitude. When deadheading, gardeners are tending their garden in a most intimate way. Deadheading a flower refreshes a plant’s appearance, controls seed dispersal, ... Full Story

The Sheriff talks Budget

The Sheriff talks Budget

Budget 101 There are tough times ahead for Larimer County government in terms of financing all of the mandated services the county must perform and the non-mandated services that enhance the quality of life that the citizens have come to expect. With the shrinking property taxes that support most of county government, and the decline in sales tax that funds much of the jail and some other county services, the county is having to tighten its belt even further. The county departments and ... Full Story

Sheriff’s office explains wildland fire role

Sheriff’s office explains wildland fire role

Wildland Fires Several newspaper articles and anonymous comments in "RH Line" of the Reporter Herald regarding the Round Mountain Fire in the Big Thompson Canyon prompt me to write this. It is obvious that the sheriff's role and responsibility for wildland fire suppression is generally not understood. Recent statutory changes further muddied the waters on the jurisdictional issues involved. By Colorado statute, the sheriff has always been the "fire warden" for the unincorporated ... Full Story
