The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property.

HOLIDAY PRODUCT SAFETY TIPS

Turkey fryers

The National Fire Protection Agency discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures, and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of “oil-less” turkey fryer.”

TURKEY FRYER HAZARDS

Many units easily tip over, spilling the hot oil from the cooking pot.

If the cooking pot is overfilled with oil, the oil may spill out of the unit when the turnkey is placed into the cooking pot. Oil may hit the burner or flames, causing a fire to engulf the entire unit.

Partially frozen turkeys placed into the fryer can cause a spillover effect. This too may result in an extensive fire.

With no thermostat controls, the units also have the potential to overheat the oil to the point of combustion.

The lid and handles on the sides of the cooking pot get dangerously hot, posing severe burn hazards.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

If you choose to use a turkey fryer, please use the following tips.

Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and other flammable materials.

Never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck.

Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping.

Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you do not watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.

Never let children or pets near the fryer even if it is not in use. The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.

To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer.

Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. If possible, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil splatter.

Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades. Oil and water do not mix, and water causes oil to spill over causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.

The National Turkey Federations recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every five pounds in weight.

Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department for help.

Holiday Cooking Fire Safety Tips

From Berthoud Fire Protection District

Preparing a special meal for friends and family especially around the holidays, is a time-honored and much loved tradition, but the kitchen can be one of the most hazardous rooms in the house if you don’t practice safe cooking behaviors. The cooking stove or range is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries. Before you begin preparing your next meal, stop and think about the simple ways you can reduce your risk of becoming a statistic.

Because Berthoud Fire Protection cares about you, your family and your home, we prepared this list of safety suggestions.

Good Cooks Know Safety is Always on the Menu

Use Good Judgment

Avoid cooking if you’ve been drinking alcohol or are taking medication or other substances that can cause drowsiness. The kitchen is no place to be if your judgment and ability to focus are impaired.

Keep High and Dry

Keep anything that can catch fire- potholders, dish towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, or curtains away from the stovetop heating elements or open flames.

Get a handle on safety

Always keep the handles of pots or pans on your stovetop pointed away from the front edge of the stovetop. You will be less likely to bump into them and children less likely to reach them. Use the back burners instead of front ones whenever possible.

Avoid distractions

Talking on the phone, watching your favorite television program and other distractions can lead to trouble in the kitchen. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

Create kid-free and pet-free zones.

As eager as young cooks may be to help prepare or serve food, they are safer away from the kitchen. Consider making your kitchen a childfree zone during busy holiday times or allow children to help only when you can focus on them completely and all heat sources are off/cool to the touch. Keep pets out of the kitchen, too.

Keep track of time

Setting a timer is a good idea when your dish is baking inside the oven or if you are simmering food on the stovetop. Not only will you avoid overdone meals, but the timer reminds you to stay alert and focused.

If you have a cooking fire

When in doubt, just get out. When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 after you leave.

If you decide to fight the fire:

For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you or your clothing.

For a microwave oven fire, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. Unplug the appliance if you can safely reach the outlet.

For a stovetop fire, keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby when cooking, if a small grease fire starts in a pan; smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan.

Never use water or a fire extinguisher in an attempt to extinguish a grease fire, as it might actually spread the fire.

Firefighters from the Greeley Fire Department were called to 238 49th Avenue Place in Greeley shortly after 8:00 a.m. this morning. Initial arriving units reported smoke coming from a single family home. Upon further investigation, crews found the home owner had pulled a garden hose into the front door of the house and then into the attached garage to attempt to extinguished a motorcycle that was burning inside the garage. Crews had the homeowner leave to an area of safety and then very quickly pulled a firefighting hose into the garage, extinguishing the fire and holding the fire to the garage.

Simultaneously, other responding crews checked the rest of the house for any occupants who being exposed to the smoke that had spread throughout the home. Once they ensured the fire was completely extinguished, the homes concealed spaces (walls, attic) were checked for any hidden fire. The home was ventilated and air monitored until all harmful smoke and gases were removed. The fire has been determined to be accidental by investigators. The occupant was attempting to start a motorcycle using aerosol starting fluid. The Greeley Fire Department reminds citizens that starting fluids are often a mixture of volatile hydrocarbons which can be highly flammable and should only be used with extreme caution following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Damage is estimated @ $5,500 and no injuries were reported.

Small steps can make positive changes. Is is time to change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Tragically, home fires kill 500 children ages 14 and under each year.

In the U.S., almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without working smoke alarms. Forty percent of the fatal fire injuries occurred in homes with no smoke alarms at all, while 23% occurred in homes in which at least one smoke alarm was present but failed to operate.

The Berthoud Fire Protection District is participating in a national home fire safety campaign called Change Your Clock Change Your Battery®. Sponsored by Energizer, our fire department, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the program urges Americans to adopt a life-saving habit: changing smoke alarm batteries when clocks are changed back from daylight-saving time each fall. This year’s time change occurs on Sunday, November 6.

Now celebrating its 24th year, the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program focuses on home fire safety education. We are aggressively promoting the life-saving Change Your Clock Change Your Battery message in our community.

We also want to take this time to remind citizens to change the batteries in their carbon monoxide detectors.

We need to remind community residents of the importance of installing new batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working in case of a fire and to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sincerely,

Fire Chief Stephen Charles
