Hidden Fire Damages Greeley Home

At 10:00 this morning firefighters from the Greeley Fire Department were called to 1841 7th Avenue in Greeley on a possible structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found light smoke coming from the attic space of a single story house. Fire crews quickly established that all occupants had safety evacuated the home and began to search for the source of the smoke. Fire crews utilized thermal imaging equipment and located a fire burning within a wall. It was quickly determined that the hidden fire had traveled up the interior of the wall and had begun spreading to the attic space. Fire crews quickly began opening up the wall and extinguishing fire as it was exposed. Simultaneously, crews began cutting a hole in the roof to access the attic space and extinguish the quickly spreading fire. The Red Cross was called to assist the 4 residents of the home who were displaced because of the fire. The fire was extinguished and stopped from spreading throughout the attic. Fire crews remain on scene removing smoldering insulation and debris as the investigation is initiated. Investigators are working to determine the cause and determine the amount of damage. No injuries were reported.

Aging Electrical System Caused This Morning’s Fire

At 10:00 this morning firefighters from the Greeley Fire Department were called to 1841 7th Av in Greeley on a possible structure fire. The fire was extinguished and stopped from spreading throughout the attic. Investigators have determined the cause to be the homes aging electrical wiring. Damage is estimated @ $20,000.

Many houses constructed pre 1950′s have what is called knob and tube wiring, including the home involved in this morning’s fire. Knob and tube is a type of open wiring system that is susceptible to dampness and abrasion which can lead to leakage of currents and arcing fires. If homeowners experience any of the following symptoms, they should have their home wiring checked by a licensed electrician:

· Frequent or re-occurring issues with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers

· A tingling sensation when you touch an electrical appliance or other metal objects

· Discolored or warm wall outlets, or sparks from an outlet

· A persistent burning smell coming from an appliance, room, or area

· Flickering or dimming lights

HOLIDAY PRODUCT SAFETY TIPS

Turkey fryers

The National Fire Protection Agency discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures, and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of “oil-less” turkey fryer.”

TURKEY FRYER HAZARDS

Many units easily tip over, spilling the hot oil from the cooking pot.

If the cooking pot is overfilled with oil, the oil may spill out of the unit when the turnkey is placed into the cooking pot. Oil may hit the burner or flames, causing a fire to engulf the entire unit.

Partially frozen turkeys placed into the fryer can cause a spillover effect. This too may result in an extensive fire.

With no thermostat controls, the units also have the potential to overheat the oil to the point of combustion.

The lid and handles on the sides of the cooking pot get dangerously hot, posing severe burn hazards.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

If you choose to use a turkey fryer, please use the following tips.

Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and other flammable materials.

Never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck.

Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping.

Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you do not watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.

Never let children or pets near the fryer even if it is not in use. The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.

To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer.

Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. If possible, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil splatter.

Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades. Oil and water do not mix, and water causes oil to spill over causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.

The National Turkey Federations recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every five pounds in weight.

Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department for help.

Holiday Cooking Fire Safety Tips

From Berthoud Fire Protection District

Preparing a special meal for friends and family especially around the holidays, is a time-honored and much loved tradition, but the kitchen can be one of the most hazardous rooms in the house if you don’t practice safe cooking behaviors. The cooking stove or range is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries. Before you begin preparing your next meal, stop and think about the simple ways you can reduce your risk of becoming a statistic.

Because Berthoud Fire Protection cares about you, your family and your home, we prepared this list of safety suggestions.

Good Cooks Know Safety is Always on the Menu

Use Good Judgment

Avoid cooking if you’ve been drinking alcohol or are taking medication or other substances that can cause drowsiness. The kitchen is no place to be if your judgment and ability to focus are impaired.

Keep High and Dry

Keep anything that can catch fire- potholders, dish towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, or curtains away from the stovetop heating elements or open flames.

Get a handle on safety

Always keep the handles of pots or pans on your stovetop pointed away from the front edge of the stovetop. You will be less likely to bump into them and children less likely to reach them. Use the back burners instead of front ones whenever possible.

Avoid distractions

Talking on the phone, watching your favorite television program and other distractions can lead to trouble in the kitchen. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

Create kid-free and pet-free zones.

As eager as young cooks may be to help prepare or serve food, they are safer away from the kitchen. Consider making your kitchen a childfree zone during busy holiday times or allow children to help only when you can focus on them completely and all heat sources are off/cool to the touch. Keep pets out of the kitchen, too.

Keep track of time

Setting a timer is a good idea when your dish is baking inside the oven or if you are simmering food on the stovetop. Not only will you avoid overdone meals, but the timer reminds you to stay alert and focused.

If you have a cooking fire

When in doubt, just get out. When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 after you leave.

If you decide to fight the fire:

For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you or your clothing.

For a microwave oven fire, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. Unplug the appliance if you can safely reach the outlet.

For a stovetop fire, keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby when cooking, if a small grease fire starts in a pan; smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan.

Never use water or a fire extinguisher in an attempt to extinguish a grease fire, as it might actually spread the fire.
