Maurice “Red” Haworth, a lifelong resident of the Berthoud area, died peacefully in the comfort of his home, at the age of 83 on April 3, 2012. His pioneer farm west of Berthoud has been in the Haworth family since 1901.

Maurice was born Sept 20, 1928 to Everett and Ina Haworth. He was active in farming all his life. He also worked various construction jobs around Colorado. He married Allene Gettman on March 12, 1949. They raised four children, Karen, Marilyn, Charles and Stanley. Allene passed away on Oct 1, 1986. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister Margaret, and a brother Myron.

Red saw farming evolve from horsepower to gas power and was a constant presence in the Berthoud area all his years.

As faithful as a doctor making his rounds, Red traveled daily from coffee shop to coffee shop, sharing his smile and good nature with everyone he met.

One of his favorite pastimes was sitting outside in his yard, among the cottonwood trees, soaking up the sunshine. He loved admiring his flag, and visiting with anyone who cared to stop by. How ironic that the mighty cottonwood trees lasted only as long as the man who loved them.

Maurice is survived by his daughters Karen Sorenson of Loveland, Marilyn (John) Allen of Fort Collins, and sons Charles (Dana) Haworth of Florence, and Stanley (Julie) Haworth of Campion, seven grandchildren Jessica Binder, Nicole Haworth, Derek Haworth, Leah Sorensen, Ryan Ward, Josh Wadsworth and Diane Velasquez and ten great grandchildren.

A viewing will be Monday, April 9, 2012 at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 9th and Lake, Berthoud.

Dorothy Jean Rust
(May 23, 1935 – February 27, 2012)

Dorothy Rust, 76, of Loveland, Colorado, suddenly fulfilled God’s plan on February 27, 2012 in the presence of her husband, John.

One of five children, Dorothy was born in the family farmhouse in Deep River, Iowa to Cleo and Mabel Holdsworth. She moved with her family to Denver in 1941. In 1942, the family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. From Albuquerque, they moved to Kingman, Arizona from 1942-1947. After her Mother’s passing in 1947, the family moved to Bullhead City, Arizona from 1948-1950, and then to Ft. Sumner, New Mexico from 1950-1951. In 1951, the family moved to Loveland, Colorado. She attended Loveland High School, graduating in 1953.

In 1954 she met the love of her life, John Rust, Jr. They were married at the First United Methodist Church in Wheatland, Wyoming on February 11, 1956. They shared 56 years of marriage and the love affair continues today. Sharing their common interests in life’s endeavors, they raised a family of three children in Loveland. Dorothy and John were both involved in many occupations before acquiring Loveland Sports Center in 1967. As well as owning and operating the Sports Center, Dorothy owned and operated R&R Cookie Junction in downtown Loveland.

Her love of kids led her to being involved with the original Loveland Youth Group, which later became the Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County. She also worked with the Loveland Baseball Association to establish the baseball complex at the corner of First and Taft to benefit the community. While serving on the Chamber Board, Dorothy was involved in the re-creation of the Corn Roast Festival, helping to bring the community together. This tradition continues today. Dorothy was also on the board of Foothills Gateway Rehabilitation Center through Foothills Service League, as well as many, many local community and service organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.

Dorothy was loved and will be missed by all of her many friends and family members. She is survived by Husband, John; Sons, Bill and wife Pam (Loveland), Ed and wife Mary (Gillette, Wyoming) and Daughter Debbie (Altamont, New York). Also, sisters Helen (Jerry) Lundberg, Ruth Logan, Lois (Newt) Weber; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Mabel Holdsworth and Brother Robert Holdsworth.

At Dorothy’s request, in lieu of flowers, which wilt and fade away, a more appropriate and lasting tribute would be to contribute to our youth and community. Therefore, we ask for donations in Memory of Dorothy Rust to be sent to Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, CO 80537, for one of the following organizations: The Boys and Girls Club of Larimer County, Foothills Gateway or Meals on Wheels.

Cremation has been completed and Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at the First Methodist Church on Sixth Street and Grant Avenue in Loveland. A luncheon and sharing of memories will immediately follow the service.

Dennis Eugene Speicher, 71, of Gill, Colorado was born October 16, 1940 in Holyoke, Colorado to Gordon Leroy and Rosie Opal (Owens) Speicher. He died January 20, 2012 at Aspen House in Loveland.

Dennis was a life long farmer who had a deep love of the land. He farmed in the Berthoud-Loveland area for over 45 years. In 2002, he retired from farming due to health issues, and he and his wife moved to Gill to enjoy their retirement. He had a long love for horses, which led him to enjoy many horse related activities, and meet and make many friends across the country. He owned and operated Speicher Harness Shop, where he made custom draft horse harness. His love of draft horses was formed when, as a boy, his Dad farmed with horses in the Holyoke area. He loved to sit behind a team of horses, and hear the quiet of the outdoors. He was a charter member of the Northern Colorado Draft Horse Association, holding most offices in that club over the years. He was also a member of the Antique Caterpillar Club, and a past member of the Berthoud Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to horses and antique equipment, Dennis loved to camp and fish, ride his motorcycle and spend time at the local coffee shop, reminiscing with friends.

He married Marjorie Schroetlin in Loveland on August 7, 1958. They were blessed with two children: Denise and Douglas.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Marje, of over 53 years, daughter Denise Lauerman and husband Steven of Loveland, son Douglas Speicher and wife Pam of Greeley, sisters Nadine Hooley of Loveland, and Donna (Calvin) Lohnes of Johnstown, and brother Devere (Nancy) Speicher of Loveland: 3 beloved grandaughters, Tanya Banulis (Brad) of Montrose, Raquel Wertsbaugh of Salida, and Heather Speicher (Steve) of Ft. Collins. Also 3 adored great-grandchildren, Landon Walker, Tyler and Addison Banulis, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Jim Wertsbaugh, and two grandsons, Casey and Richard Wertsbaugh.

Viewing will be Tuesday, January 24, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 10:00 a.m., at the First Christian Church, 2000 N. Lincoln Ave, Loveland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pathways Hospice or Aspen House to further education and training for dementia and Alzheimer patients and caregivers, in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave, Loveland, CO 80537.

April 12, 1960 – January 8, 2012

Trudi Lynn Hershman, of Berthoud, Colorado, passed away on January 8, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born to Sandy and Jess Gingery in Longmont, Colorado, on April 12, 1960. Trudi graduated from Berthoud High School in 1978, and married David Hershman on October 1, 1977. After her children started grade school, Trudi followed her dream of going to college. She earned a degree in accounting and teaching from Colorado State University and went on to work for Boulder County Aging Services and Human Services.

Trudi loved her large family, friends, and co-workers. She enjoyed camping and 4-wheeling in the great outdoors and spent many weekends in the mountains with her family and friends. Nothing was more important to her than spending time with her family. She also liked shopping with the girls and quilting.

To know Trudi was to love her, and anyone that knew her would agree. She is survived by her beloved husband, David, son Jared, daughter Jennifer Domann, Jennifer’s husband Brian, and her soon-to be born granddaughter, Svea. Trudi’s dream was to see Svea and we know she will.

She is further survived by her mother, Sandy Gingery; sisters Sheri Orback, Jodi Starck and Mindi Jones; her brother Allan Gingery; and numerous nieces and nephews. Trudi was preceded in death by her father, Jess Gingery.
