Berthoud High Buzzing with Homecoming Spirit
By Laurie Hindman Berthoud Recorder It’s homecoming week and Spartan pride is in the air at Berthoud High School. Every day is filled with activities geared to rouse Spartan energy, leading up to Friday night’s big game against the Northridge Grizzlies. Monday was college gear day — students sported their favorite school color and logos; Tuesday was preppie day and some of the students looked straight out of the 70’s, with polo shirts, sweater vests, argyle socks and plaid skirts; ... Hansen Misses State Golf Cut in Playoff
By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LOVELAND — All Nils Hansen needed to advance to next month’s 4A state golf championship was for his birdie attempt to fall. It didn’t. Then all he needed was his follow-up par putt to fall to stay alive. That didn’t happen, either. In a matter of seconds Tuesday the German exchange student went from being the first Berthoud High boys golfer to qualify for state to wondering what could’ve been at the Northern Regional tournament at Mariana Butte ... Wizards Repel Berthoud for 1st Time Since 2002
Windsor 35, Berthoud 13 By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder WINDSOR — Berthoud head football coach Dan McGinn didn’t have much to say in the aftermath of Friday’s Tri-Valley Conference game at Windsor’s H.J. Dudley Field. Whether it was his disappointment in the outcome or disgust in how the game turned out doesn’t really matter. The scoreboard said all he needed to know: Windsor 35, Berthoud 13. 1642: What’s Next? Back to School, Already?
By Ralph Trenary Berthoud Recorder The reaction of some of my friends and neighbors to the start of the new school year has been surprising. Then, I have to remember that my own high school experience was more than a little out-of-the-ordinary. When I started junior high in the fall of 1974, my high school area was bursting at the seams, with near-certainty of continued increases in the number of students, and dismal prospects to get school bonds passed for expansion or construction. ... BERTHOUD 40, CENTAURUS 26 — Spartans Stymie
By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LAFAYETTE -- It would’ve been easy for the Berthoud Spartans to get down on themselves and let the season slip away. Dan McGinn’s squad had watched Centaurus score 16 straight points in a little more than six minutes in the first quarter to take a double-digit lead. His team had two extra points blocked and two snaps sail over the head of quarterback Jordan Major, one resulting in a safety. But the Spartans have been down this road before and they ... Full Story
Fifth-Grade Champs Prove It’s Not Just About
By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LONGMONT -- Emotions were overflowing as evidenced by the tears that covered Cody Braesch’s eyes in the aftermath of Sunday’s game with Platteville at Sandstone Field. For the 11-year-old player, this was the culmination of what he and his Berthoud teammates had been working for all season. They had just wrapped up a 34-14 victory that crowned them the first-ever Northern Colorado champions among the best fifth-grade football teams from Weld County and ... Full Story
Inexperience Lightning Strike Too Late in Arena Soccer
By Michael Hicks Berthoud Recorder LOVELAND -- It’s not like anything defenseman Mark Cromrie has ever faced before, but Sunday night’s home opener for the Colorado Lightning was definitely an experience. Good and bad. The Lightning, a first-year franchise in the Premier Arena Soccer League-Pro (PASL), opened their 2008-09 home schedule at the Budweiser Events Center against the Texas Outlaws. While the Lightning came out on the short end of an 8-5 score, just playing was a good first step ... Full Story
Eagles Grounded by River Kings
By Recorder Staff It had to happen sooner or later. The Colorado Eagles lost. The Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Eagles, 6-2, on Saturday night in Southaven, Miss., ending Colorado’s eight-game season-opening winning streak.
