Smith, true lawman and public servant

Smith, true lawman and public servant

I’ve been watching the Sheriff’s race with some interest over the last several months and I have to ask; who is this Constitutional Carl that recently arrived on the political scene? I’ve attended candidate forums and speaking engagements and to be honest, I’ve yet to hear any real substance from him. He simply espouses the kind of rhetoric that we’ve all come to expect from aspiring politicians over the years. Once you cut through the rhetoric, he appears to be just ... Full Story

Justin Smith experienced lawman

To The Editor: I’ve taken the last several months to study the Republican candidates for Sheriff. On one side, I see an experienced lawman, Major Justin Smith, who has demonstrated his commitment to public safety and to caring for his community. With experience in all aspects of our Sheriff’s Office, 19 years of dedicated service to our community, a record of fiscal responsibility and a both a bachelors and masters degree in criminal justice, he has obviously prepared himself ... Supporting Carl Bruning

Supporting Carl Bruning

It was great to see Carl Bruning and his wonderful supporters at the many events around Larimer County in recent weeks. They were handing out stickers to children and interacting with the public in a positive way that we all can appreciate. It will be good to have Carl Bruning leading the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office in a positive way in the years ahead. It will be good to have a sheriff bringing a breath of fresh air to the department with a renewed focus on serving "we the people" ... Full Story

Letter to the Editor on Candidate for Larimer County

Letter to the Editor on Candidate for Larimer County Sheriff

Larimer County has a very important election this fall. The current Sheriff is term-limited, so we the citizens must elect a replacement and choose someone not just to protect us, but lead us and effectively run the largest elected office in the county. We need someone who has experience, education and proven dedication to law enforcement. We must determine for ourselves what qualifications each candidate possesses. Do they have actual experience as a peace officer? Have they served in a ... Full Story

Supporting Justin Smith for Sheriff

Supporting Justin Smith for Sheriff

Growing up, my parents always told me that the best way to judge a person’s character was by what they did when no one was looking. As the field of candidates is asking for our support to become our next sheriff, I am asking what have you done for our community when no one was looking? Let me tell you what I learned about republican candidate Justin Smith. Over the last two decades, he has been a member of the Site Improvement Team at Shepardson Elementary School, a member of the Partners ... Full Story

Pluto is not a “former planet”

Pluto is not a “former planet”

This is in response to your June 24 article titled: "EarthSky Tonight-June 24: Earth passes between sun and Pluto tomorrow." I wish you had a comments section because I would have posted this in that section. Pluto is not a "former planet." It is a planet. Please do not blindly accept the controversial demotion of Pluto, which was done by only four percent of the International Astronomical Union, most of whom are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed in a formal ... Full Story

Mental health care is vital too

Mental health care is vital too

As our nation and our community continue to study the impact of health care reform legislation, I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts about the need to ensure that behavioral health care is central to these conversations. As Vice President of Business Development at Poudre Valley Hospital and a Board Member of Larimer Center for Mental Health (LCMH), I am well-acquainted with the costs and results of untreated mental health and addictive disorders in our ...
