Paul Ryan is not a great intellectual

Paul Ryan is not a great intellectual

Recently we were introduced to a 2005 recording of Paul Ryan addressing the Atlas Society, apparently a fan club for Ayn Rand. In it he outlines his belief that Social Security should be privatized and turned over to Wall Street. The amazing part of his comments was that he claimed that whenever he had a legislative issue that, he would return to Rand’s 1957 novel, Atlas Shrugged   and re-read all 64 pages of John Galt’s radio address. Do you ... Full Story

Romney: another big lie

Romney: another big lie

4 Pinocchios for a truncated, 14-year-old Obama clip      Just as we have not been very impressed about many of the Obama campaign’s claims about Mitt Romney’s business career many years ago, we were not initially that impressed with the Romney campaign’s effort to dredge up a 14-year-old quote to demonstrate that President Obama wants to “redistribute wealth.”  The clip was so old — he was just a state senator — and the ... Romney hates America?

Romney hates America?

Does Romney dislike America?     By E.J. Dionne Jr.    The most incisive reaction to Mitt Romney’s disparaging comments about 47 percent of us came from a conservative friend who e-mailed: “If I were you, I’d wonder why Romney hates America so much.” A bit strong, perhaps. But the more you think about what Romney said, the more you wonder how he really feels about the country he wants to lead. What ... Full Story

Is Team Romney to blame for Middle East violence?

It all seems too well timed. At a critical point in the campaigns, with Romney trailing in the polls, an inflammatory video insulting the Prophet Mohammad is placed on YouTube and demonstrations begin. Team Romney is listening in and cannot wait to make a statement and blame the president. Why did this happen just now? Why was Team Romney so closely monitoring the twitter account of the Egyptian Embassy? The answer may be found by ... Full Story

Obama not a Sociaist

Obama not a Sociaist

Is Obama a Socialist? By Tom Head, About.com Guide   Answer: Not by any definition of the term that mainstream socialists would consider acceptable. It's true that both the Bush and Obama administrations introduced government subsidies in industries that the government has not historically subsidized to the same extent, but this is not, strictly speaking, a socialist move because it does nothing to concentrate ... Mitt Romney, casino capitalist

Mitt Romney, casino capitalist

Mitt Romney and the New Gilded Age By Robert B. Reich The election of 2012 raises two perplexing questions. The first is how the GOP could put up someone for president who so brazenly epitomizes the excesses of casino capitalism that have nearly destroyed the economy and overwhelmed our democracy. The second is why the Democrats have failed to point this out. The White House has criticized Mitt Romney for his years at the helm ... Full Story

Massacres, more to come

Massacres, more to come

A tragedy we will not try to avert By Eugene Robinson,  Will we even pretend to do anything to prevent the next mass shooting by a crazed loner? I doubt it. We’ll just add Aurora to the growing list — Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tucson — and wait for the inevitable. When that next atrocity comes, we’ll tell each other we’re shocked and stunned, knowing full well we should be neither. We’ll probe the assailant’s life in search of a motive, ... Full Story

Living under the gun: Bill Moyers

Living under the gun: Bill Moyers

            Living Under the Gun
At least 12 are dead in Aurora, Colorado, gunned down by a mad man at a showing of the new Batman movie filled with make-believe violence. One of the guns the shooter used was an AK-47 type, assault weapon that was banned in 1994. The National Rifle Association saw to it that the ban expired in 2004. The NRA is the best friend a killer's instinct ever had. See Video   More ... Full Story

Moyers, no speech for the poor

Moyers, no speech for the poor

Bill Moyers Essay: The Cowardly Lions of ‘Free Speech’ July 6, 2012 Bill opens this week’s show by explaining how last week’s Supreme Court decision not to reconsider Citizens United exposes the hoax that Citizens United was ever about “free” speech. In reality, Bill says, it’s about carpet bombing elections “with all the tonnage your rich paymasters want to buy.” See It Here

What’s killing the Post Office?

What’s killing the Post Office?

OPINIONS     The Postal Service is struggling, but not because of the mail By  Fredric Rolando, Published: July 19 Fredric Rolando is president of the National Association of Letter Carriers.  Would it startle you to learn that the U.S. Postal Service netted an impressive profit in the first quarter of this fiscal year? Probably so, given all that has been said about an agency supposedly bleeding billions of dollars as Americans abandon ... Full Story
